Guardians of the Galaxy Writer Teases the Death of Rocket Raccoon

Guardians of the Galaxy is one of Marvel’s biggest franchises when it comes to the films. They are really crucial to the story told in the MCU, but they are equally important in the comics as well. According to the pattern followed by these comic book storylines, when a major event descends upon us, it’s only natural for fans to think a major death will occur.

If you consider the case of Infinity Wars, we got to see the symbolic death of Drax the Destroyer. Well, his human form called Arthur Douglas was left behind, who has no recollection of his past adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy, while the real Drax that we know is currently enjoying time with his family in a dimension existing within the Soul Stone. He could be brought back in the future run of the comics, if a future writer thinks to do so.

For now, the Guardians of the Galaxy run by Donny Cates is approaching its end and this may not be the only loss the Guardians of the Galaxy will experience in the near future. A fan asked the writer on twitter whether he’ll kill any dogs during his run on the book and here’s what he replied:

“Raccoons aren’t dogs, right?”

Guardians of the Galaxy Death of Rocket Raccoon

Now if anyone who is slightly aware of the Guardians of the Galaxy will know that the only infamous Raccoon in the entire Marvel Universe is Rocket. So, perhaps in the current run of the comics, Rocket could meet his demise and this shouldn’t come as a major shock to anyone because it has been teased by the writer already. Cates could be totally bluffing just to see how people react, but we shouldn’t ignore the possibility that he may actually be pointing toward a gruesome future.

In the films, one would think that Rocket is certainly untouchable and Marvel just can’t kill off a big name in the team of misfits of the Galaxy, but this doesn’t go similarly for the comics because the Guardians lineup in the comics is drastically different from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are certainly more marque name characters involved in the comics, so Donny Cates could surely pull the plug on Rocket.

But just imagine if this leads to the demise of Rocket in the MCU as well. The movies usually do follow the comics even though the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes its own major changes. Rocket may not die in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame as that could lead to a lot of problems for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Rocket is the highlight of the team, but what if Vol. 3 kills off the character?

Rocket & Groot Mini-Series Disney Plus

We have always suspected that after Guardians Vol.3, we could potentially get a Marvel project with the dynamic duo of Rocket and Groot in the lead, and with the coming of Disney+, a potential series may even be possible. But we just might not get to watch the adventures of Rocket and Groot if the Studios end up following what is going to happen in the comics.

It is already suspected that the films could be following the comics when it comes to Drax the Destroyer. Dave Buatista is unwilling to work with Disney post the firing of James Gunn, so rumours suggest that Drax may have been killed off during the reshoots. But all that should be taken as a Grain of Salt because the death of Drax may not be good for Vol.3 either. He is a core member of the Guardians and is certainly the highlight of the films, so killing him off because of BTS banter may not be such a good idea.

Avengers: Endgame will come out on April 26, and it is only then that we can find out about the fate of these characters. Here’s the official Synopsis of Endgame:

“Adrift in space with no food or water, Tony Stark sends a message to Pepper Potts as his oxygen supply starts to dwindle. Meanwhile, the remaining Avengers — Thor, Black Widow, Captain America and Bruce Banner — must figure out a way to bring back their vanquished allies for an epic showdown with Thanos — the evil demigod who decimated the planet and the universe.”
