List of Top Indian Web Series That Are Centered Around Women

For coming age Indian web series and even movies, having women as protagonists or having a central theme of women progression and empowerment is the new cool. While movies like Tumhari Sulu, Hichki etc. have done so well this year, here are some wonderful Indian web series that are ruling the digital arena. Some of the top Indian web series that are centered around women are:

 1. Girl In The City

The series about a girl next door Meera Sehgal who moves from a small town to Mumbai to fulfill her dream of working in a fashion industry. The series stars the most familiar face of online web series Mithila Palkar in the lead. It captures the emotions of every girl who is incredibly ambitious and would stick to fulfilling her goals despite constraints put by society and sometimes the people around her. The show by Bindass also released a second and third season which follow Meera’s journey from working as an intern to getting a job in her dream company and then leaving all of it to commence her own creative business.

 2. The Trip

Again a show launched by Bindass, this fiction web series runs on the same lines as Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Dil Chahta Hai; The only difference is that it’s a girl squad this time instead of the guys. The series revolves around a group of four girls who decide to go on a road trip from India to Thailand for the bachelor party of one of them. The star cast includes Bollywood actresses like Lisa Haydon, Shweta Tripathi, Sapna Pabbi and internet sensation Mallika Dua. The first season of the series was quite a hit and the first episode of the second season has just dropped on Bindass’s channel on Youtube India.

 3. Engineering Girls

Indian Web Series That Are Centered Around Women

The most recent of all these web series, this series was released in 2018 by the top digital entertainment creators:  The Timeliners. The five-episode series tells the tale of three girls Maggu, Sab and Teja in an Engineering college. It’s a fresh take on college and hostel life from a female perspective. The leading star cast has three of the most popular young online talents, Barkha Singh, Sejal Kumar, and Kritika Avasthi. Directed by the very talented Apoorva Singh Karki, the show is extremely relatable and hilarious. The Timeliners partnered with Sharda University for this show.

 4. Man’s World

This is a very interesting series by the online branch of Yashraj films called ‘ Y films’.  Man’s world shows a world in which men’s lives are swapped with women’s lives.  This feminist series is tailor-made to flick a switch in the minds of everyone to care about the equality of sexes for a balanced society. The show has cameo appearances by famous women like Parineeti Chopra, Richa Chadha, and Kalki Koechlin.

 5. It’s Not That Simple

The lesser known of the lot, this Voot original series marked the web series debut of the well-known actress Swara Bhaskar. This series explores the subjects of urban marriage, love, and infidelity. The protagonist played by Swara tells her tale to the viewers while taking them on a path of self-discovery with them.  She is a housewife who is stuck in an unhappy marriage until she attends her school reunion where she meets two of her ex-lovers. The series gives a message that it shouldn’t be just the woman who has to compromise and sacrifice for saving a marriage or a relationship.

 6. Mahi Way

This isn’t purely a web series as it premiered on Sony TV in 2010 and was quite a hit. It was the first T.V show produced under Yashraj Films Television. The series stars the lovely Pustii Shakti as the bubbly Mahi Talwar who’s on a journey of falling in love with herself while facing the challenges her life and her career presents to her. The show was way ahead of its time with a very refreshing storyline and the main character of a chubby girl next door who prefers to live life on her own terms.

The show is available for viewers on Netflix India as well as the Sony Liv app.
