Avengers 4 will be the movie where Captain America and Iron Man will finally put their grievances aside and work together. But it is highly likely that we might not even get to see it on screen. Cap and Tony have been on different paths ever since the Avengers broke up in the Civil War. Cap offered his hand towards the end of the film but Tony did not get over the fact that his best friend could hide something like that from him. We would have gotten the reunion, but then again, another alien invasion in New York happened and Tony could not make the call.
Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely did try to resolve the story arc of Steve and Tony in Infinity War, but every time they did that in the early drafts of the film, the story sort of came to a halt. The initial plan was to get Rogers and Stark face-to-face, but it just couldn’t work that way and here’s what Stephen McFeely said:
“[It] meant that you’re slowing down your Thanos [Infinity] Stones [quest] to deal with other threats from other movies. And that became, as much as we wanted to do, and as many times as we wrote those scenes, it became clear that this movie needed to be propulsive and be about Thanos and what he represented to the Avengers.”
The creatives left the resolution of the banter between Cap and Tony to happen in Avengers 4, but now it seems that we will not get to see the much-anticipated reunion after all. It is rumored that the story that has been devised by the writers will only work if the film starts with a time jump after Infinity War.
So if there will be a 5 years gap between Infinity War and Avengers 4, then the much-anticipated events that we want to see happen will have already happened.
So, Tony’s return to Earth, him going to Wakanda and reuniting with Cap, Earth struggling to survive after the snap and many other things will all either be intended or shown only through flashbacks. MCU Cosmic’s Jeremy Conrad, who is a very reliable source for scoops like these has confirmed the fact that Avengers 4 will begin after a time jump.
So, if this is going to be the case, then we will obviously not be seeing a proper reunion moment between Cap and Tony the way we expected it. There is a high probability that Tony doesn’t even get to reunite with Cap in the present. He may actually meet Steve from the past. It will all depend upon when he travels through the Quantum Realm with Ant-Man.
Avengers 4 is going to be a very special outing and by the looks of it, we are going to see almost every Superhero that Marvel has established till now get to be a part of the film. Here’s what Kevin Feige had to say about the film:
“I will say, the entire intention of Infinity War and the next Avengers film next year was to have an ending – to bring a conclusion to 10 plus years, 22 movie narrative in a way that hadn’t been done before in this particular type of film. It’s been done before in films where there are a finite number of books, and they finish telling the story for the books, so they come to an ending. Characters like Spider-Man or Batman or James Bond or Iron Man, who have been around for so long and are always refreshed in comic books or novels or movies, you don’t necessarily get that kind of an endpoint – and we wanted to do that, which is what these next two Avengers films are.”
Avengers 4 comes out on May 3, 2019, and here’s the official synopsis:
“A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.”
Hopefully, the upcoming trailer of Avengers 4 proves us wrong, and we get to see a tease of their reunion already!
