X-Men: Dark Phoenix – Is The Mystery Funeral For Mystique?

The first trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix came out just yesterday and it impressed quite a lot of people, to be honest. It does seem that Director Simon Kinberg is a man of his word as he seems to have successfully written off the mistakes that he made in X-Men: The Last Stand. There were some drawbacks of the trailer, but it is safe to say that there was quite a lot that we liked as well. What was great about the trailer was that it did raise many questions in our minds.

Most people have stopped caring about Fox’s X-Men franchise now and that may be a big reason for this film just not making any amount of money. But the new trailer has raised some eyebrows. There was nothing big happening in the trailer that would attract a lot of people, but still, it gave out a lot of positivity and the ones who actually saw the trailer were left in inquisitiveness. One major question that came to our minds was the mystery funeral that was happening.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix Mystique

In “The Last Stand” the Phoenix took over Jean Grey and that led to her killing off Professor X and Cyclops, and since this film seems to be going in a similar path, the first thought of who’s going to die comes with the name of Cyclops. The trailer does tease that he will try to stop Jean to go on a darker path and that is what brings his name to the list of the dead. But doing that, Fox would exactly repeat what they did in the first movie. So, there has to be another name that gets crossed off the list.

It cannot be Storm, Nightshadow, Charles or even Beast as we see them present at all times. The only one who had less screen time in the trailer was Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique. She faulted Charles for keeping the reality from Jean, and because of her nature that has been portrayed in the last two films, we know that she would go head first in order to stop Jean. This film seems to be reuniting Jean and Beast. As we saw this shot:

Later we saw Beast, who is has been Charles’ best friend for years being really angry at him. He did say – “This is your fault, Charles,” which means that this particular scene happens after the funeral. That is why Beast also joins the Brotherhood that Magneto was building in order to go up against Jean. So, he will carry a great pain, and that will only come when Mystique gets brutally killed at the hands of Jean.

Also, this would be a big motivating factor for Magneto to be back in the game as Erik was also emotionally linked with Raven, and seeing what Jean did because Charles could not manage to keep the Phoenix from emerging, he forms the Brotherhood and the wedge between Charles and Erik continues again.

Jennifer Lawrence revealed that her 3 movie contract was up with X-Men: Apocalypse, but since she was great friends with Director Kinberg, he was able to lure her in for another X-Men film to give her character a defined ending. Here’s what she told in her interview with Digital Spy:

“My contract was up, I didn’t have to do another one, but if I didn’t do another one, what would her story be? I felt like I owed it to the fans, and I owed it to the character to follow her journey, to be fair to the movies, and not be like, ‘I don’t want to do another X-Men!’ And then I just never show up and everyone’s very confused about the Mystique they’ve been following for the last three films.”

So, this more or less confirms that the first name to go down will be none other than Mystique. Rest the movie is going through extensive reshoots currently, and the word is that they are trying to put an end to the franchise, so we could expect some more deaths to come in. with the Disney Fox merger looming in, we could see the likes of Magneto finally go down, along with other names like Beast. Charles can obviously not be killed off because then Logan would be rendered pointless.

So, let’s see what happens after the reshoots. X-Men: Dark Phoenix comes out on February 14, 2019.
