The Nun: The Box Office Predictions Break ‘The Conjuring’ Franchise Records

The Conjuring Spin-off, “The Nun” has just hit the theatres and there is every bit of hope that the film is going to do way better than the previous movies of the ConVerse (the Conjuring Universe). The horrifying portrayal of the Nun in The Conjuring 2 is what led to this spin-off. Bonnie Aarons’ performance was so impactful that it really terrified people to death! Her performance and the character was loved by the general viewers as well as the critics. And now, Warner Bros. Might have found themselves another winner and possibly a franchise!

The Nun The Conjuring

The Film was shot in the deepest darkest Romania, up in Transylvania and it is set up in the year 1952, which is a time where big castles and graveyards still existed in many parts of the world. The locations it took to shoot would really give us the creeps and now that the film is out, it is expected to be doing really well. The Conjuring and Annabelle movies have been profitable for the studios but the numbers that The Nun is tracking are even higher than those two franchises.

The Conjuring opened with $41 Million and went on to make $319 Million worldwide. It was followed by Annabelle which opened with $37 Million and grossed $257 Million in total. Then came the sequels as The Conjuring 2 came out and earned $40 Million at its opening weekend, and then it went on to make $320 Million worldwide. Finally, Annabelle: Creation hit the theatres last year and it opened with the lowest opening weekend numbers thus so far having brought in $35 Million. It then went on to bring in $306 Million worldwide.

But the big factor in these films was the amazingly low budget involved. The first Conjuring film was made for just $20 Million while the second one cost $40 Million (which was a touch expensive for these kinds of movies). The first Annabelle movie had a budget of just $6.5 Million and the second one was made for $15 Million.

The Nun looks to be going on the same great path of glory (which in this case means profit!) as it is really hyped and people do want to see it. WB did not hesitate to spend on it as it has a budget higher than the first Conjuring movie and both the Annabelle movies. Also, the Marketing of the film does look to be carried out quite well. It had a production budget of $22 Million which does seem to be faring well for WB as the Box Office predictions for the opening weekend at the Domestic Box Office are indeed matching the standards.

The earlier reports for The Nun were tracking numbers which might have made the movie to earn higher than both the Annabelle movies as it was tracking numbers around $32-37 Million for the first Weekend. Then came the final trailer of the film which began the real marketing campaign before the movie finally came out. That was obviously supposed to get more people excited and now according to the new report given by Deadline, the Corin Hardy directed spin-off is tracking for a box office debut between $36 and $45 million.

It would certainly be a great achievement for WB if the film does end up grossing over $41 Million and beat all other movies in the ConVerse. What is really helping this particular film is that there has not been any other big movie in the Horror genre to make an impact in 2018 and that is why The Nun does seem to be a highly anticipated film for people.

The Nun is currently playing in theatres and here’s the official Synopsis:

“When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together, they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.”
