The MCU is the most renowned franchise in Hollywood now because it has been able to establish a whole Universe that is filled with characters that we grew up reading about. These past 11 years we have loved the 20 movies they have successfully put out and we couldn’t ask for more.
While these movies have catered to audiences of all age backgrounds at all times, making these movies light-hearted and fun, there have been moments of darkness and brutality they have surrounded the characters that we have loved. A sort of co-incidence in all those moments was many characters losing their arms/hands in the process of Universe building. It started happening as a tribute to Star Wars in Phase 2. Here’s what Feige had to say about it:
“So, I’m obsessed with Star Wars — and it didn’t start out as intentional, but it became intentional. It [Losing an arm] sort of happens in every Star Wars movie, but I was sort of looking at it, ‘Okay, is Phase Two our Empire Strikes Back‘?’ Not really, but tonally things are a little different. Somebody gets their arm cut off in every Phase Two movie. Every single one.”
So here are the important characters that have lost their arms in the MCU:
1. Phil Coulson
Coulson has become one of the most beloved characters in the entire MCU due to his continuous appearances in 5 seasons of Agents of SHIELD after his tragic departure from the Movie Universe. His journey on the show also became the reason for him to lose his arm which happened as a result of him preventing a Terrigen Crystal which begins to turn his arm to stone. Fortunately for him, Mack had his Axe and chopped his arm off before he turned into a stone man! Well, from there on his prosthetic arm allowed him to be Captain America, so good for him.
2. Cull Obsidian
The most recent “Getting your arm chopped off” incident happened in Infinity War when Wong and Doctor Strange teamed up with Tony and Banner to take on Cull Obsidian and Ebony Maw in the New York Battle 2.0. Wong sent him to the North Pole using his sling ring, and just as Obsidian was trying to reach out of the portal, Wong closed it and cut off his big creepy arm.
Nebula is a moving walking bag of spare body parts and along with many of her body parts, she specifically lost her bionic hand in the first Guardians of the Galaxy during the battle of Xandar when she cut it off to escape. But she lost her real arm during her endeavours with Thanos.
4. Yellow Jacket
In the final battle of Ant-Man where two insects fought a major size altering battle in a little girl’s bedroom, Scott managed to win against Yellow Jacket by making a killing move as he shrunk between the molecules, went subatomic and messed up Yellow Jacket’s suit completely in the process. The suit malfunction shrunk his arm first, and then took him down completely. Poof, Gone!
Well, he recently lost his eye in Ragnarok and got a new bionic one in Infinity War, but in Phase 2 he was the one to lose his arm in The Dark World. Loki cast an illusion to prove that he’d betray his brother again in front of Malekith and in process of doing that, he chopped off Thor’s hand right when he was about to catch Mjolnir. Only that was an illusion, and Thor had his hand at all times.
6. Ulysses Klaue
Again as a part of Phase 2’s arm losing montage, one of the best villains of the MCU, Ulysses Klaue lost his arm in his debut appearance at the hands of Ultron. Later he got a more lethal weapon, so Win-Win!
Nebula was not the only one to have followed the arm losing tribute in Guardians of the Galaxy, as our favourite humanoid plant lost both his arms fighting off Gamora. Only they grew back later on!
The dark Elf also turned out to be a victim of the tribute paid by Marvel to Empire Strikes Back. Malekith was attacked by Thor with the two teleportation spears that he caught on both his arms, and Jane transported them to a different realm, and just moments later, the same thing happened to his entire body and spaceship!
9. Alrich Killian
The arm losing game in Phase 2 began with Aldrich Killian who fought against Tony, and right when he was about to make the killing blow, Tony took a page out of Wolvie’s book and “Snikt”, came a blade out and chopped the burning arm of the Mandarin!
Well, Bucky has led a pretty tragic life. He lost his arm during the events of the first Captain America movie, but it was shown during The Winter Soldier that he survived the fall and then was later experimented upon by Arnim Zola. The fall and the experiment caused him to lose his real arm, then his fight against Iron Man took off his Bionic arm as well. Infinity War also teased Rocket taking off his arm again, but unfortunately, it won’t happen.
