‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Creative Team Explains How Tony Got The Phone to Contact Steve Rogers

Tony Stark and Steve Rogers haven’t been on the best of terms lately. Iron Man wanted the Sokovia Accords to be signed and Winter Soldier to be persecuted as soon as possible. Captain America wanted the Accords to be scrapped and helped Winter Soldier to be set free. And hence the Civil War came into being within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But with Thanos calling, Tony Stark needed to find a way to contact Captain America just in case. They may not be the best of friends like they used to be but they need to stay in touch just in case they become the Earth’s last line of defense. Presenting – Infinity War – The Insane story behind Tony getting the Phone to contact Captain America!!!

After Civil War, the Avengers were scattered and fractured. The Earth’s mightiest heroes were divided in their ideologies and hence could never be one as they once were. Tony Stark encountered Thanos as his Q-ship loomed over the heart of New York City. Maybe this is why Thanos was able to take down the Avengers. He was not facing a team but individual members. Had they been a team, they might have been able to take on the Mad Titan and even win the game.

Tony Stark could be blamed for this as he never even used the phone to contact Captain America and allow the Avengers to assemble again. He even had a burner phone to talk to Steve Rogers and let the past be in the past. Marvel’s creative team even claims they had an alternative scene prepared just in case the burner phone was decided to be put to good use.

The burner phone was left by Captain America at the Raft at the every end of Civil War to let Tony Stark talk to Captain America if things go way out of hand. Tony never used it but the creative Team had contingencies in place to explain how the phone came into being if the MCU decided to use that plot element to forward the story direction of the Universe. Infinity War Director Joe Russo is heard saying:

“[Tony Stark] luckily carries around a flip phone.”

“It is convenient that he keeps it charged, you know,” added co-writer Stephen McFeely.

“Fully charged. Well, to be fair, we did have another scene between Pepper and Tony that illustrated where the phone came from,” Joe Russo said. “But it was a reshoot scene that we then opted to revert back to the park scene with, so…”

“Also to be fair, if Captain America had given any of us a burner phone to call him, I’m sure,” says co-director Anthony Russo.

“Yeah, it’s not going in my sock drawer,” said McFeely.

So there you have it. Tony Stark and Captain America may be enemies now but they realize that the people of this planet might need them one day. So they put aside their collective differences and planned to join hands when the need arises. Although Tony went back on this promise in infinity War and did the unthinkable. He failed to call Steve Rogers and offer a truce.

When Thanos and his forces came to Earth for an invasion, it was already too late. Tony lost the phone in a fight with Cull Obsidian and Ebony maw and it was Bruce Banner who found the phone and called Captain America and the rest of the allies.

The Directors of Infinity War knew beforehand that the Studio might want to further that aspect of Tony and Steve’s friends turned enemies turned friends storyline, so they decided to keep this element alive just in case. The Directors are heard saying:

“I think through the experience of working on Captain America: Civil War and working with (Christopher) Markus and McFeely on Civil War, we knew that there was a culmination coming,” said Anthony. “I think part of the reason why we were drawn to tell the story of Civil War and one of the reasons why we thought it was such a great place to leave the Avengers divided at the end was because we knew the greatest threat they would ever face would be coming in Thanos.”

Avengers: Infinity War has already been released. The official film synopsis for the movie reads:

Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment.
