WB is currently focusing to put out solo Superhero movies in the DC Universe. Their attempt at the shared Universe has not made a huge impact so far and the 2 Solo movies that they have done are actually the ones which have received the better critical reviews compared to their team up films. Man of Steel was decent but it is actually Wonder Woman that has kept DC alive for now. DC is now looking to bring out projects like Aquaman, Black Adam and they are investing big money upon them.
Aquaman is the very next project that hits the theatres this December, and it will be followed by Shazam! and Wonder Woman: 1984 next year. Post-2019, DC is a mystery as they have so many movies under development. Suicide Squad has Gavin O’Conner attached to it and that movie is said to begin production next year. The two Flash directors have also mentioned that if everything goes right, we will get to see the movie in 2020, which means that it will also start shooting next year.
Matt Reeves has mentioned that The Batman script is progressing, and his solo movie will also start production in 2019. Recent reports have suggested that the Birds of Prey movie which is under Cathy Yan has been confirmed to start shooting in January by Margot Robbie. The Joker Origins movie with Joaquin Phoenix has also been confirmed to begin production very soon. So by this count, we have 5 movies which will begin shooting within 2019.
To add over that, Dwayne The Rock Johnson also mentioned recently that his Black Adam will also begin shooting soon. Here’s what he said:
“The script came in, it’s great, we’re working on it. If things come together in the way we anticipate them coming together, that feels like a 2019 movie, in production.”
So, by this verdict we now have a total of 6 movies which WB and DC are currently putting great focus on. This also means that in 2020 and 2021, we may actually get 3 movies each year. Dwayne Johnson recently talked about this reconfiguration that DC is going under as they are trying to figure things out, and he did mention that Black Adam is surely a part of that.
Here’s what he said:
“Black Adam is coming along. The script is coming along. I’m very happy with it. That’s a project that obviously you want to take your time [with]. I think it’s in a very exciting time now, with DC, because there’s some rejiggering going on. There’s reconfiguration going on. There’s looking at the macro map of the DC universe. And I know those guys are working diligently at DC and Warner Bros too, working closely with our producers too, to see how Black Adam unfolds in the universe. But yeah. I mean, I’m excited about it. It’s just coming along and being written.”
He also teased the fact that Black Adam will be a part of the larger Universe of DC along with being a standalone film. He mentioned that other Superheroes from the DC films may also appear in his movie. He said:
“Without giving anything away, there MIGHT be maybe a cameo or two of some of the other DC superheroes. We’ll see. That’s been the beauty of Black Adam as we’ve been developing it is that we could make a movie that just stood on its own too as well, but that’s also the beauty of those universes coming together at DC.”
Black Adam may actually have a cameo himself in the upcoming Shazam! movie. The two solo movies are expected to converge after Shazam and Adam get enough character development for themselves, and they are surely going to take each other on at some point of time.
The other DC movies which are said to be under development with WB are while Man of Steel 2, Joker vs. Harley Quinn, Deathstroke, Lobo, Justice League Dark, Joker Spin-off (Jared Leto), Nightwing, New Gods, Cyborg and Green Lantern Corps. No update has been made upon these and this year’s San DiegoComic-Conn will confirm which DC movies will come out till 2021.
