Ant-Man and the Wasp was one of the most anticipated sequels of 2018 not because it was a follow-up movie to the hit 2015’s Ant-Man, but it was supposed to bring more clarity about the state of the MCU going forward, instead, we may be in a lot of confusion especially over Avengers 4.
The hype generated prior to the release was enormous and the impression was created that the movie may drop some big easter-egg that will help fans understand what they can expect from Avengers 4, but alas it remains shrouded in typical Marvel secrecy.
Evangeline Lilly was asked about the connection between Ant-Man and Wasp and Avengers 4, here’s what she said:
“I can’t say really what are seeds about Avengers 4, or about a potential other Ant Man movie, but I can say that things are definitely in a movie for a reason. I will say that. Whether it’s an actual Easter egg, or whether it’s a misdirect, and I’m very proud of you for sighting the art of misdirection, because it was something that we definitely talked about a lot and became a fanatic in the movie.”
The director of the movie Peyton Reed indicated that Ant-Man and Wasp contains a set of easter-eggs that may help shape the future of MCU. He said:
“Yeah, there’s a lot of little-hidden things. I mean, definitely as you go through Hank Pym’s laboratory, on the practical set and then some of the stuff we added later digitally, there are a lot of weird, little Easter eggs and things. And then as we kind of go further down into the Quantum Realm in this movie, there definitely is some things to sort of look for. That was a challenge, the Quantum Realm, ’cause it really could be infinite. It could be anything. And figuring out how much of our story took place in the Quantum Realm and particularly like designing that last act that cross-cuts between the chase and the Quantum Realm. But there’s stuff to look for in there definitely.”
A large chunk of the movie dealt with the fall out of Civil War events on the life of Scott Lang who has been struggling to keep it together. It never made any reference to the cliffhanger ending of Avengers: Infinity War where Thanos had snapped his fingers leading to the elimination of half of all life in the galaxy, until the very end where it ties in directly to that scene.
Paul Rudd revealed that post-credits of the sequel has some really cool stuff that connects it directly to Avengers 4, he said:
“People have asked me about [Ant-Man and The Wasp] and this, I don’t know if I’m supposed to say it but I’ll say it, it happens kind of concurrently. It’s very important because it doesn’t exist in a vacuum. You have to stay through the end because when you see this thing, through those post-credit scenes, there’s mind-blowing stuff that ties into Infinity War.”
In the post-credits scenes, Scott Lang goes into the Quantum realm in search of Quantum healing particles, but he got trapped as the entire Team Pym in the physical world turned to dust in the aftermath of big snap. In the end, it reads: “Ant-Man and Wasp shall return”. This has become a very standard line in MCU movies as the Infinity War had “Thanos will return”.
None of this shed light on anything as it does’nt answer the big question – who is returning from the dead in Avengers 4 and how? Marvel wants fans to believe that those who are dead are indeed dead despite the announcement of Spiderman: Far from Home or Guardians confirming their presence in GOTG Vol.3. Everything is still as dark as it was before.
The movie has incredibly amazing cast including Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/ Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne/ Wasp, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Michelle Pfieffer as Janet Van Dyne, Lawrence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster, Judy Greer as Maggie (Scott’s former wife), Michael Pena as Luis, Abby Ryder Fortson as Cassie (Scott’s daughter), Walton Goggins as Sonny Burch, Hannah John-Kammen as Ghost, Randall Park as Jimmy Woo.
The movie is running successfully in theatres. The official movie synopsis can be read below:
