With Thanos ending half the Universe in his crusade to rid the cosmos of half of all life to ever exist, he has achieved his much talked about ‘balance’ in Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos’ convictions make sense. The resources of the universe are finite in nature. If life is allowed to grown unchecked, then it will end up destroying whatever’s left of it. To stop the Universe from a suicidal march, Thanos took matters to his own hands. He did so by collecting all the six Infinity Stones and achieving Godhood. But to complete his Infinity Gauntlet and the eventual ‘Snap’, Thanos had to sacrifice a lot. His greatest sacrifice was killing the only thing he ever truly loved in the whole wide universe – Gamora.
Gamora and Nebula were trained from childhood in the art of assassination by Thanos but only the former won Thanos’ heart. Nebula though loved Gamora as well and considered Gamora her greatest possession. So when the news of Gamora’s death came, she must have taken it really badly. But wait!! The grief is not over. This new Infinity War theory could mean there is even more heartbreak to come in MCU’s greatest sibling relationship.
Presenting Gamora and Nebula first appeared in the MCU in Guardians of the Galaxy volume 1. The official film synopsis for the movie reads:
Brash space adventurer Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) finds himself the quarry of relentless bounty hunters after he steals an orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain. To evade Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with four disparate misfits: gun-toting Rocket Raccoon, treelike-humanoid Groot, enigmatic Gamora, and vengeance-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when he discovers the orb’s true power and the cosmic threat it poses, Quill must rally his ragtag group to save the universe.
Gamora is rightfully called the Universe’ Fiercest Woman. She is a warrior and an assassin trained by Thanos the mad Titan personally. Many consider her as Thanos’ true daughter and she has hit all the right marks to fill that role. She is deadly, ruthless and won’t hesitate to kill you in an instant if you stand in her way. But she has a fatal flaw as a villain. She has a heart. And that has led to her rebelling against her father and joining the Guardians of the Galaxy to stop her tyrant guardian from wreaking even more havoc than he has in the past. In the MCU, Thanos tasks Gamora to obtain the Power Stone from Peter Quill. She would later team up with Star-Lord, Drax, Rocket, and Groot and become the Guardians of the Galaxy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Nebula, played by Karen Gillian is also introduced in GOTG Vol. 1. She is depicted as a stone cold cyborg warrior with a grudge against the whole universe, especially Gamora. It would be only later that we find out that Nebula hates her sister so much because Gamora never acknowledged her existence or appreciated her the way Nebula does for Gamora. In GOTG Vol. 2, Nebula finally succumbs to her sibling’s newly formed feelings for her as a sister and agrees to help her in defeating Ego in the movie. It is then that the two sisters actually start bonding.
And just when Gamora and Nebula had come to terms with each other, Infinity War shows us Thanos killing Gamora and Nebula is devastated to be forced back into solitude. And this is where this new theory pushes that frontier of the Nebula-Gamora relationship even more. If you think Infinity War was heartbreaking, this will literally blow you away. Marvel Studios is hard at work to make their fans’ skip a beat once more. If the mother of all cliffhangers that was the ending of Infinity War wasn’t enough, there’s more in store from where that came from. There is a new theory in town, fellas!!!
Avengers 4 will see the surviving heroes travel through time to collect the Infinity Stones before Thanos could and prevent the events of Infinity War from ever happening in the first place. The stones of Power, Space, Reality, Time and Mind can be grabbed on to easily. But it is the Soul Stone that is the real kicker. No matter how strong you are or how noble your intentions are, the one golden rule of the Soul Stone is that it will only allow you to wield its power if you are willing to sacrifice a person you care about the most to it.
If the Avengers are time traveling, then different heroes will be tasked with obtaining a different Infinity Stone. Since Nebula is the only one who knew the location of the Soul Stone in Vormir, it is logical to think that she is part of the party that travels to that desolate planet to acquire it before Thanos does. Remember that in this past timeline, Gamora is not dead, not yet anyway. Nebula will try to contact her, since she would like to see her long-dead sister again. This is where it gets interesting.
As we said, Gamora is not dead in this timeline but the Soul Stone would still require a sacrifice if the Avengers intend to obtain the Soul Stone. And this brings us to one of two different heartbreaking possibilities:
The first is that Nebula will be the one to sacrifice her this time. She loves her sister too much and she is ready to give up her own life if it means Gamora stays alive. That would mean it would be Nebula’ and not Gamora’s death that is used as a sacrifice to obtain the Soul Stone. Nebula is a sort of minor character in the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe and her sacrifice wouldn’t leave as much of an impact on the overall MCU as it would leave on Gamora. As much as we would like to calm ourselves with the ‘We can live with that’ attitude, the truth is that it will steel be a depressing scene to watch. One sister giving up her life so that the other one keeps on living – there is nothing more heartbreaking than that!!
Or is it? The next possibility is even more saddening. Let’s say Gamora and Nebula meet again and Nebula explains to her what is going to happen to her in the future. And Gamora agrees to sacrifice herself if it means Thanos doesn’t get the Soul Stone. Think about it. Gamora wants to keep the Soul Stone away from Thanos and who better to protect it than the Avengers themselves?!?! If Gamora willingly agrees to sacrifice herself one more time to the Soul tone on Vormir, it will be for a noble cause. This time, it will be the good guys and not the villain who gets the most powerful infinity Stone of the Marvel universe.
Gamora will be willing to do anything, including sacrificing herself, if it means that kind of power stays out of reach of the hands of the Mad Titan. Nebula, in the meanwhile, will continue watching helplessly as she loses her sister once again. Losing her once took a massive toll on her. Losing her twice and that too, right in front of her own eyes, might just drive her crazy.
The sibling duo appeared together again for the second time in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. The official film synopsis for the movie reads:
Peter Quill and his fellow Guardians are hired by a powerful alien race, the Sovereign, to protect their precious batteries from invaders. When it is discovered that Rocket has stolen the items they were sent to guard, the Sovereign dispatch their armada to search for vengeance. As the Guardians try to escape, the mystery of Peter’s parentage is revealed.
