Avengers: Infinity War made us wait for 10 years as it took 18 whole movies to build up a story and that too was split into two parts. This was the ultimate thriller that we would never see coming. Thanos was totally the big bad we needed and he was surely the best MCU villain till now. His character motivation was great, and all in all, he was a total bad ass who successfully accomplished his life’s goal, which was to bring balance in the Universe.
The movie was indeed like a heist film where Thanos and his Black Order moved from one place to another, stealing Infinity stones and leaving behind a trail of death and destruction. First, Thanos retrieved Power Stone after he destroyed Xandar and Nova Corps. Then he moved on to fetch Space stone which was in the possession of Loki, what followed was that he killed half of the Asgardians, Heimdall, and Loki right in front of Thor and acquired Space Stone as well.
The movie started with a bunch of character deaths, and it ended with an absolute carnage which nobody saw it coming. For the first time, Marvel really went for a dark tone in the movie and had real stakes which were a departure from its light-hearted template that it had adopted for a decade. Still, it was full of fan-pleasing moments that made us fall in love. Spoilers ahead!
If you haven’t seen the movie yet, then turn at this point itself. In the movie, the most grieving point for us was the moment where Gamora died. Right from the beginning, when Gamora started explaining the motivation of Thanos and why he exists. She said that the only thing he ever wanted was to destroy half the universe and with Infinity stones, he could do that with the snap of his fingers. The location of Soul Stone was teased.
Gamora’s expression at the talk of the Soul Stone gave it away that she knows the location of the Soul Stone. Then as she makes Quill promise her about killing her if Thanos got hold of her, the Soul Stone assumption was cemented. Then finally it was revealed that Gamora knew about the location of the Soul Stone after Thanos sent her on a mission to find it. She kept on lying to Thanos that she had not found the stone ever.
But torturing Nebula, Thanos found a memory where Gamora revealed that she was never going to tell Thanos about it. Thanos then beat the truth out of Gamora by making her watch the torture of her sister. To make it stop, Gamora took her father to the stone.
It was revealed that the Soul Stone was at Vormir, and that is where Gamora took Thanos. The trailers for Infinity War teased the relationship between Thanos and his favorite daughter. So, this gave rise to a particular theory suggesting the reason why the Soul Stone has not appeared till now, is because it requires a big sacrifice of the soul of a loved one, a soul for a soul.
Thanos and Gamora met with the Red Skull at Vormir, who was transferred there by the Space Stone a lifetime ago in Captain America: The First Avenger. He tried to wield Cosmic Cube but instead, he got banished to Vormir.
He told Thanos there is only one way he could have the Stone for himself. He told him that there had to be a sacrifice of a loved one. Listening to this, Gamora thought that this was never possible as Thanos does not love anyone in the entire Universe.
As it turned out he sacrificed his favorite daughter Gamora, the only person he loved in this universe to get the Soul Stone. This scene was really important to build the character of Thanos as the Mad Titan did have the intensity to love, and the tears in his eyes proved that.
Well, this was a very different reveal than the comics as in the Infinity Gauntlet comics, Adam Warlock had the stone, and since he is not going to show up till Guardians Vol. 3, Marvel had to change things up for the better. But, still, the powers of the Soul Stone may be similar to the comics. There would surely be the presence of the Soul World.
This is what makes us think that Gamora may still be alive. We did not see Thanos explicitly use the Soul Stone, but it was believed that his talk with baby Gamora towards the end, where Gamora was present in a place that had a tint of orange was actually in the Soul World itself.
So, if Gamora is alive in the Soul World, her soul may theoretically be able to get transported out of the Soul World right? Well, it is a theory that may possibly bring her back to life. Another theory circulating the internet now is that Gamora after the sacrifice may herself be turned into the Soul Stone instead of being trapped in the Soul World.
Thanos gave up Gamora to have the power of the Soul Stone for himself, but what if giving up someone to call on the power of it, actually uses the soul of the sacrificed to create the stone. In this way, Gamora may be the key element that the rest of the Avengers need to bring down Thanos.
Also, it is believed that all the people throughout the Universe including the Avengers, who were disintegrated towards the end of the movie may have been transported to the Soul World instead of being gone for good. So, there may be a chance to bring them all back and undo what Thanos did. We also saw in a set photo that Gamora is alive standing along with Ant-Man and the Wasp, who will show up in Avengers 4, so she surely is coming back to life in the next one.
Guardians 3 is also coming up, and the Guardians are incomplete without Gamora. She is the one who holds the band together, so Marvel cannot afford her to be gone for good before Guardians 3. Let’s see what happens in Avengers 4. Avengers Infinity War is running pretty successfully in theatres. Directed by Russo Brothers and Produced by Kevin Feige & Co. The screenplay is written by a talented duo – Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
