Lord Voldemort is the ultimate bad guy in the Harry Potter series and we all love to hate him. He is feared by most and has a past that is so interesting that it makes him fascinating. Voldemort is power hungry but that is not the only thing he is. He craves greatness and immortality and has achieved so much in the field of magic that he can give any great wizard a run for their money.
10. Severus Snape:
Snape may have been the bravest man but he was also extremely powerful. The potions master was a brilliant occlumence that let him keep the biggest secret and fool Voldemort for such a long time. Snape made many spells on his own including the deathly ‘Sectumspemra’. He was a big threat to Voldemort from the beginning and could have been a match for Voldemort if he got the chance to fight him.
9. Minerva Mcgonagall:
McGonagall is the head of Gryffindor house and an extremely powerful witch. She fought to save Hogwarts and her students from Voldemort and later became the new headmistress of Hogwarts. Even though she chose to serve the world of academics but Minerva was an extremely skilled duelist and her animagus form is also an added advantage.
8. Delphini:
This one is controversial because of all the hate the ‘cursed child’ got from fans but this list is factual. Delphini is the offspring of Voldemort and Bellatrix and is extremely powerful as well as hateful. She has many skills that her father possessed such as she can fly and is skilled in dark magic. Even though this situation can never appear but if she and the dark lord fought, Delphi would surely give an equal fight.
7. Antioch Peverell:
The oldest brother from the tale of three brothers is known for his thirst for power just like Voldemort and he was also known as the original owner of the elder wand. According to the myth, death gave him the elder wand but in reality he invented the wand himself. Antioch could defeat Voldemort as he was known to be the ultimate killer and only died because someone killed him in his sleep.
6. Gellert Grindelwald:
It has been established that before Voldemort, Grindelwald was the darkest and most powerful wizard. He stole the Elder wand from Gregorovitch and conjured many plans for the ‘greater good’. He made his own spells and tested them on his fellow students at Durmstrang. He was expelled for performing dark, twisted experiments. He befriended young Albus Dumbledore and together they led a Wizarding revolution to end International Statute of Secrecy. They created a global hierarchical order led by wise and powerful witches and wizards but then their partnership fell apart. Before being defeated he had conquered most of Europe and had become extremely powerful. This shows that Voldemort and Grindelwald could be equals in terms of magical skills.
Here is what Dumbledore told Harry Potter about his relationship with Grindelwald, he said:
“Grindelwald. You cannot imagine how his ideas caught me, Harry, inflamed me. Muggles forced into subservience. We wizards triumphant. Grindelwald and I, the glorious young leaders of the revolution. Oh, I had a few scruples. I assuaged my conscience with empty words. It would all be for the greater good, and any harm done would be repaid a hundredfold in benefits for wizards. Did I know, in my heart of hearts, what Gellert Grindelwald was? I think I did, but I closed my eyes.”
5. Rowena Ravenclaw:
She was one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was known as the most powerful witch of her time and her name had become synonymous with ‘intelligence’. Her inventions were extraordinary and her wit was not matched by anyone. Ravenclaw was extremely skilled and cunning and could surely defeat Voldemort with just the use of her mind.
The house colors are bronze and blue while the symbol is eagle. The members of House Ravenclaw are academically inclined and highly learned who pride themselves with being original thinkers and inventors. Hermione Granger was an extremely intelligent student, at the top of her class but she was assigned Gryffindor even though she admitted that Sorting hat considered her for Ravenclaw.
4. Godric Gryffindor:
Godric Gryffindor was one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He espoused traits and values such as courage, chivalry and determination. It’s house emblematic animal is lion and colors with which they are associated are scarlet and gold i.e color of fire. It is one of the greatest houses at Hogwarts, infact Professor Minerva McGonagall had this to say: “The House of Godric Gryffindor has commanded the respect of the wizarding world for nearly ten centuries.”
Gryffindor was known to be a great warrior and was famous for his dueling skills. He may not have been into dark magic and stuff like Voldemort but could definitely defeat the dark lord in a fair duel. The stories of his greatness were well known and we are sure that he could have been a good match for Voldemort.
3. Salazar Slytherin:
Salazar was a purist blood wizard. He believed that only whose ancestor’s blood is pure should have the right to be at Hogwarts. He was the founding member of the school along with Gryffindor, Helga and Ravenclaw. He hated Muggle born students and even proposed their ouster from Hogwarts. When other founders did not agree with his opinion, he left the school and died in around 11th century after creating the Chambers of Secrets.
Slytherin created his own language and made a secret chamber in the school which was hidden because of his powerful magic for thousands of years. Slytherin was feared by most and was among the most powerful wizards. He is also Voldemort’s ancestor and possesses most of his skills himself. If Slytherin and Voldemort fought we are pretty sure that Slytherin would’ve been victorious as he knows all the nasty and dark stuff and would not hesitate to use it.
2. Albus Dumbledore:
The wizard who found Voldemort and brought him to Hogwarts to make him the powerful wizard that he became was none other than Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. Voldemort feared Dumbledore and knew that he couldn’t defeat him easily even when Dumbledore was more than a century old. Dumbledore was easily the better wizard and Voldemort could not defeat him in a fair duel. He was the professor of Transfiguration and later became headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Here is what his obituary read:
“Albus Dumbledore was never proud or vain; he could find something to value in anyone, however apparently insignificant or wretched, and I believe that his early losses endowed him with great humanity and sympathy. I shall miss his friendship more than I can say, but my loss is as nothing compared to the wizarding world’s. That he was the most inspiring and the best loved of all Hogwarts headmasters cannot be in question.”
1. Merlin:
Merlin is the most famous wizard outside the world of Harry Potter too as his stories and fables have been around for centuries. It is believed that Merlin, who was a wizard and a part of King Arthur’s court was extremely powerful and fought many dangerous creatures. He is seen as the most respected wizard in the wizarding world as an award in his name (Order of Merlin) is given to the wizards who do something outstanding.
He lived in the medieval era where he studied in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in his formative years. He was assigned to Slytherin House. It is possible that he may have been taught by Salazar Slytherin himself. His magic wand was made of English oak.
It is often believed in the Harry Potter world that old magic is more powerful and therefore Merlin would know things Voldemort doesn’t know and could defeat him. He had enormous amount of knowledge and experience in magic which allowed him to master the art of spells, bewitchment and chants and use against his opponents.
