Here’s Why Tom Hardy’s Venom Was Not In The Trailer

Venom is a version of Peter Parker aka Spiderman who possess all his abilities and powers but he is a lot darker. He is a man who develops superpowers after inhabiting the body of an alien. He does not have his senses and an Iron-Spidey suit designed by Stark Industries (ofcose). He can never run out of webs like Spiderman as his body can generate endless webbing. He has the power to evolve and adapt itself in different environments. Moreover, he has the unique ability to embody all the abilities of his opponent which makes him an unstoppable monster.

There has been a long-standing demand of the fans regarding a solo Venom movie after Sam Raimi’s version of the iconic comic book character in the last installment of the Spiderman trilogy failed miserably. Sam later confessed that he did not want Venom to be part of the movie and that the studio forced him to put him there. This caused widespread anger and outrage among Venom fans and thus the clamor for the solo movie began from there.

Sony heard the cries and sensed an opportunity as well, and decided to launch Venomverse which is separate from MCU. The actor Tom Hardy was cast as the protagonist. He is one of the most sought-after guys working in Hollywood. He played Bane in Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. He could have been young Wolverine as well but the project was never greenlit by the studio.

The Venom trailer came out recently and it was pretty tight in giving us anything, but the hints that the trailer gave us revealed quite a bit of what will happen in the movie. When it was announced that we will get a new trailer for Venom, fans hoped that we get to see a full look at Venom and his suit and how exactly he is going to look in this movie.

Many fans already do not approve of a Spider-Man based movie without Spidey but it is happening. So fans have been optimistic and hoped that they will get something from the trailer and it will not be like the first IGN reveal of Venom which had Tom Hardy in his regular shirt.

The trailer did not give us Venom but only a tease at him, but it still revealed more than you think. The movie had just recently finished production and moved into the post-production stage, so obviously, a lot of the special effects in the movie were not finished. Even in the trailer, we could make out some areas that needed a CGI lift. It was revealed while the movie was being shot that this time they are going to have a full CGI suit for Venom so that they could make him look a little bigger and similar to the comics.

Well, since it is all CGI and the movie just finished its principal photography, there is no way that we could have gotten a full look at Venom since the special effects would not have been finished for him. This is one big reason for why we did not get a look at him in the trailer.

Still, towards the end of the trailer, we got to see Eddie Brock going nuts and forming into Venom as the black gooey lines movie from his neck towards his face indicated. After that, the eyes and mouth of Venom were revealed in a sort of poster which is comic accurate. So the fans could be happy about the fact that they will get the look of him right this time.

Also, the reason Venom was not revealed in this trailer was that they did not want to give anything away as of now, and want to build stuff up so that the fans can get to enjoy more of the movie in the theatres than in the trailers. Still, we will get to see Venom in action in the second trailer for sure. And that is how we might get the build-up to this movie and the hype amongst the fans would increase for the movie.

This was quite a smart marketing on the behalf of Sony as they gave a good teaser for the story without actually revealing much. It seemed to be a bad choice at first, but now it actually makes more sense as many movies have been ruined because of their marketing in the past, and so far Venom looks to be good.

We could make out that in the movie Eddie Brock is a reporter who is trying to investigate the Life Foundation in order to dig up dirt on the shady things this organization is up to. This is probably when he comes in contact with the Venom Symbiote. Riz Ahmed’s character Carlton Drake sort of owns the Life Foundation and finds the Venom Symbiote from a crash site shown in the trailer. Michelle Williams is playing Ann Weying who is EddieBrock’s ex and may turn into becoming one of the villains in this movie.

As we know from the comics, Venom is an alien Symbiote that crashes on Earth. The planet it is from is full of many Symbiotes and since this movie is based on the Lethal Protector storyline, it will feature at least one more Symbiote if not more to oppose Hardy’s Venom.

It is a classic 90’s Marvel comic where Eddie Brock becomes a hero in San Francisco, California. In the Lethal Protector storyline, the Life Foundation creates more Symbiotes which are spawned by him as they believe that a big threat to the planet is coming.

Here is a summary of the events you need to know before you read any further:

“Before the story begins, Venom makes an agreement with Spider-Man that they will leave each other alone, on the condition that Venom commits no crimes. Venom then moves from New York City to San Francisco and takes up with a group of Californian mole people. Shortly thereafter the father of one of Venom’s victims seeks him out with a group of super-powered mercenaries to take revenge. Spider-Man, seeing misleading coverage of Venom on television, heads to San Francisco to confront him and instead winds up fighting alongside Venom against five new offspring of the Venom Symbiote: Scream, Phage, Riot, Lasher, and Agony.”

But these 5 Symbiotes named, Agony, Rage, Riot, Lasher, and Scream don’t play well and end up causing all sorts of Havoc. This could happen in the movie as well and Tom Hardy’s Venom could turn into the savior of the city.

But some of the elements of this storyline needs to be done differently as Sony has confirmed that Spider-Man won’t appear in Venomverse but the vice-versa is still possible i.e Venom could be brought into MCU in the future. For instance, there is a group of mercenaries that goes by the name of ‘The Jury’, the tech on their suits is based on designs of Tony Stark, so this needs to be altered.

The choice of a writer for Venom spin-off is weird, to say the least, and shocking at worse. It is none other than 50 Shades of Grey writer Kelly Marcel who has written the entire revised Venom script. The initial reactions were mixed, on one hand, fans started to make fun and coining phrases like “50 Shades of Black”, Brock out or Cock out etc.

But keeping jokes aside, the insiders are saying that given Marvel’s screenwriting history this is a pretty bold move. He has previously worked in Saving Mr. Banks, Bronson (starring Tom HARDY) and upcoming movie Cruella.

The movie is coming out on October 5, 2018, it is directed by Ruben Fleischer. The rest of the cast includes heavyweights like Michelle Williams (Drive, Manchester by the Sea) as Anne Weying aka She-Venom or Bride of Venom; Jenny Slate, Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake. The screenplay has been written by  Scott Rosenberg, Kelly Marcel, Jeff Pinkner and Will Beall. Can’t wait to see this epic Venom outing with this rock solid cast.
