Marvel Entertainment dropped the trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp earlier this week. This movie will be the sequel to Ant-Man and is expected to follow up the story of Scott Lang after the events of the first movie. The trailer showcases the nature and application of Pump particles and how they evolve in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We are introduced to the wasp in the trailer, a partner to Ant-man, someone to watch his back (in the words of Scott’s daughter). One of the biggest highlights of the trailer is the consequences of using Pym particles to enlarge objects rather than shrinking them, as seen in the unimaginably large Pez dispenser in the final moments of the trailer.
We also know that Ant-man and Wasp will face off against Ghost (a Marvel villain) in the movie. We also know that the movie has a release date set after infinity war. But what does that mean,? Do Ant-man and Wasp survive the infinty war? Does the buffer between the two parts of the culmination of the Marvel cinematic universe mean nothing? Perhaps, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Fans have speculated how both Captain Marvel and Ant-man and Wasp may shed light on the post infinity war fight. But it seems, after looking at the trailer, that Ant-man and wasp are set right after the events of Captain America: Civil War and deals with the implications of Scott Lang’s actions in the said movie.
What does this imply? Well for one it seems quite clear that when it comes to Avengers: Infinity War, all bets are off. What I mean by that is , none of our heroes are safe including Ant-man or wasp. Even though we will get a distorted view of the Marvel cinematic universe post civil war with the ‘Ant-man and Wasp’ movie. This also implies that the entire movie will add little to our knowledge about infinity gems or Thanos himself.
Even though the timeline placement of Ant-man and Wasp limits the scope of the project, it does not, however, limit its grandeur. The movie may yet be a self-contained action-packed adventure with a hint of humor. The Marvel cinematic universe formulae that we’ve all come to enjoy over the years.
What do we get from the trailer? We see that Hank Pym is now not only comfortable with his daughter going into battle but he also sees to the fact that she is properly equipped to handle any situation that she may find herself in. In the trailer we hear Scott Lang ask, “ If I would’ve asked you to come along to help Cap, would you have “ and the Wasp replies “ if I did you won’t have been caught”. This conversation sets the tone of the Antman and Wasp relationship dynamic.
Scott Lang is the outlaw and wasp is the wisecracking Tsundere (the character in anime who initially despises the protagonist and then slowly grows close to him to a point where romantic connotations are implied almost continuously). That being said, it seems readily apparent that the Wasp is well versed with her suit’s combative ability, giving us a display of her skills with a literal interpretation of Blade Runner.
Wasp also has blasters, which it seems shoot not only energy blasts but also Pym particles. This allows her to blow up or shrink any object that she so desires. We also witness Hank Pym openly referring to the fact that they are still all on the run seems to indicate that Scott Lang’s rebellion against the UN has not gone unnoticed. When Lang was captured, his suit was also confiscated, which implies that the Pym particles so coveted by S.H.I.E.L.D. fell right into their lap.
Regardless, it doesn’t seem to matter anymore because the earth heroes must band together against Thanos for infinity war. The fact that the Ant-man sequel was scheduled to be released after Avengers: Infinity war implicates to the fact that the sequel will provide, if not the aftermath, then the background leading up to the said culmination.
What sort of background might this be? We won’t speculate, we leave that to you, the fans. Please tell us what kind of behind the scenes and shadow movements can the movie “Antman and Wasp” will showcase. Comment below with your personal theory and for everything Marvel, stick around.
