The fans have finally been heard as Marvel is moving forward with a Black Widow movie and this is what the fans have been asking for since Phase 1. Till now Marvel has been pretty vague about it saying that it is something that they have been planning for but waiting for the right time to move to the development phase.
Recently, The God of Marvel comics, Stan Lee attended Supernova Comic Con in Brisbane, Australia where he was asked about the possibility of a solo Black Widow movie. He said ‘funny you should ask that’. He assured the fans that there will be a Black Widow movie 100%. He made a similar comment about T’Challa when nobody knew except comic-book fans who Black Panther was.
Recently, Taika Waititi, director of Thor: Ragnarok revealed that if he were given a chance to direct a movie of his choosing, he would like to direct Black Widow comedy flick. Here’s what he said:
“In all honesty, I reckon I could probably bring something pretty unique to any of the franchises. So, I’d love to see Black Widow. I’d like to see Black Widow as something crazy and a bit funnier than we expect it to be. Because we know her story and it’s very sullen and very dark and her history is very dark. But! What’s the funny version of that? What’s the more entertaining version of that?”
He added:
“I really go for the underdog. And I think there’s a way in with any of the characters. You just have to find it and find what honors what’s already there with the source material but also brings it into a more entertaining form for the audience.”
Well, everything is going to change in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it and we are going to see things we have not even thought about actually happening. Black Widow solo movie is actually in the works and things are moving forward at a breakneck speed.
Maybe, this according to Marvel is the perfect time to move forward with Black Widow. And this is why Marvel has hired Jac Schaeffer to pen the script for the movie. Before I tell you any further, congrats to all Black Widow fans.
Till now we have no other details about the movie. Nobody knows that in which direction would it be moving forward. Fans have wanted to see a buddy team up movie with Black Widow teaming up with Hawkeye telling us what the hell actually happening in Budapest. But, it may or may not be the case.
We are not sure whether Marvel would set the movie in the future after Avengers 4 or it may be even set up in the past. It could be a solo movie, but a trend has started showing team-ups in solo movies, like what we saw in Cap 2, Iron Man 2, and what we will see in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Black Widow could easily follow this trend.
What is really interesting is that most people are suspecting it to be Marvel’s first R-Rated movie. Recently, a new trend has started in the Superhero genre with Deadpool, as it was really successful catering the mature audiences. Logan has continued that and hopefully, the upcoming New Mutants will do the same.
Seeing this, fans have been wondering that when will the MCU move in this direction, as they are known for their light-hearted family-friendly Superhero movies. Black Widow actually seems to be the perfect candidate for the R-Rated genre. Just imagine a spy movie with a great and mature storyline having kick-ass action sequences.
On the other hand, it could be taken as a risk considering we have seen a PG-13 version of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow in so many MCU movies and people might not like her taking a dive into a character for adult audiences.
A big example of this particular change was Logan. People loved Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, even more, when he got to license to go be the brutal animal that he is capable of. And, we could see Natasha doing the same.
Also, considering the success of recent Spy movies like this, this could be a real money maker for Marvel. What we have seen in movies like John Wick, Atomic Blonde, and many others, we could totally get to see in the Black Widow solo movie.
While the stories of Lorraine Broughton (Atomic Blonde) and Natasha Romanoff are not exactly the same, there definitely is a similar sort of energy in terms of how they could be told onscreen.
In terms of comics, the Mark Waid and Chris Samnee Black Widow run connected more with fans, as it perfectly balanced Natasha’s intense spy missions with nuanced flashback sequences about her past.
Considering how the Marvel Cinematic Universe has dealt with Natasha’s “Red Room” history, and a lot of Red in her ledger which she got in the past, a new (and possibly retconned) approach to the storyline with an R-Rated approach might be the best way to go about that.
The John Wick franchise has certainly changed the landscape of Action movies, and it gave rise to Atomic Blonde, and Deadpool & Logan as a matter of fact.
Since Natasha Romanoff is the only character fans could totally resonate within this kind of a role, Marvel should take this big step in moving towards the R-Rated genre and give us something totally new and unique in the MCU, which we have not seen till now.
According to a poll done by Fandango, an entertainment agency commissioned by USA Today, Marvel fans are overwhelmingly supporting the idea of a solo Black Widow movie as compared to Falcon, Vision, Hawkeye, Scarlett Witch and War Machine. She topped the poll by a big margin. It was a matter of time before Marvel bends before the will of the fans. This is something DCEU can really learn from MCU. But that’s a discussion of another article.
Scarlett Johansson, the actress who brought the character alive is totally ready to work on a solo movie based on Black Widow. She said this in an interview with Michigan Avenue:
“I really like playing Natasha, playing the Black Widow in The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War. It’s been an interesting journey, to take a character and grow it over these years, and peel the layers back and be able to, as you do in life, grow with this person. It’s a character that’s really enigmatic and has an amazing origins story, so there’s a lot for me to play off of.”
She added:
“I don’t know if I have the capacity for it. I think the fans were adamant about it, it could be done. It should be done, probably. It’d have to be done the right way, though. It’d really have to be its own standalone and its own style and its own story. But there’s a lot of great stuff that you could do with it. It could just be awesome.”
So, what do you guys think about this? Would you like to see an R-rated Black Widow solo? Or would you like to see her team up with someone in a PG-13 movie? Tell us in the comments.
