Why Did Thanos Abandon The Helmet In Avengers: Infinity War Trailer?

The Marvel Cinematic universe is set to expand to 65 + comic-book characters who are likely to appear in Avengers Infinity War and Avengers 4. Marvel Studios have managed to assemble a magnificent cast under one roof to create a mega comic-book event as part of phase 3. The Infinity War films are the most awaited superhero ensemble movies of the 21st century.  The movies will show the most difficult enemy of the Avengers in the form of Thanos to date.

The trailer has arrived and the long wait of the fans is finally over. The trailer showed the arrival of the Mad Titan, Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) on Earth. He is here to find out all the infinity stones, assemble them and create an all-powerful Infinity gauntlet.  The Infinity stones are insanely powerful. Each one of them individually is powerful but collectively they can rewrite reality and destroy worlds.

Thanos’ biggest appearance till date was in Guardians of the Galaxy where we saw him interacting with the villain of the movie, Ronan. In that scene. he was shown wearing a blue and golden armor similar to that of the comics along with a golden helmet. But in the trailer, his armor along with the helmet is gone, instead, he is bare hands and wearing a sleeveless breastplate.

Back in July during the San Diego Comic-Con, Joe Russo (co-director of Avengers Infinity War) explained why Thanos dropped his armor. He said:

“[Thanos] has a more casual approach in this film, and it’s very philosophical for him,” Russo explained. “It’s part of his character definition. It’s a spiritual journey for him to collect the Stones and one with which he doesn’t need armor. Once he starts acquiring the Stones, he doesn’t need armor in the same way he did when he was a warlord. It’s a very symbolic costume.”

Till now, except that small appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy, Thanos has appeared only in the post-credit scenes of the MCU movie. Earlier, he had villains like Ronan and Loki at his disposal but in the post-credit scenes of Avengers: Age of Ultron, we saw how he becomes fed up and decides to do things himself.

Josh Brolin previously opened up in an interview and said that he may not have all the Infinity stones in Avengers Infinity War. This triggered a speculation if the Thanos’ journey to collect all the gems would be stretched across two films. To address this issue, he said:

“I haven’t done the second movie so I don’t know. I literally don’t know what the second script is. I don’t know if they’ve finished the second script, and that’s the truth. I think they’re in the midst of structuring and restructuring.”

He also added that Thanos will also use psychological tactics as much as he would use brute force.

The studio has been building the hype of Thanos over a series of films, so expectations of Marvel fans are very high, some even believe that the movie will not only break the record of highest box-office collections for a superhero movie but of any movie. And it’s heartening to see that things are falling into the right place.

Thanos is coming along with his Black Order to take on the Avengers on May 3, 2018. CHEERS!
