13 Deleted Scenes From Harry Potter Movies That You Must Watch

We have previously talked about how the Harry Potter books have missed out on many important details from the books and left out crucial things in almost every movie. Did you know that there are also a lot of scenes that were previously shot but left out after the final editing? If you are a Potterhead then you would love to watch these scenes.

13. Harry Meets Snape

This scene was cut from Sorcerer’s Stone. It was the first time Harry was meeting Snape in his Potion’s class. The intensity is brought in by Snape’s famous quote, “I can teach you to bottle fame, brew glory, and even put a stopper in death.” He then singles out Potter and asks him a lot of difficult questions. It was a great easter egg scene as one of Snape’s questions is, “What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?” This indirectly meant that how much he regretted the death of Harry’s mom, Lily.

12. Dolores Umbridge Crazy Angry

If a list of most hated Harry Potter characters was to be made, Dolores Umbridge would definitely be at the top.  She was the worst version of a teacher gone wrong. The scene where she makes Harry write, “I Mustn’t Tell Lies” was really dark and painful. She used to torture students and one of the scenes featuring her was removed from Order of Phoenix.

After Fred and George, resign from Hogwarts amidst their fireworks show, Dolores is left angry. Argus Filch sees this and comes to her to calm her explosive anger as her head is literally smoking. He tries to blow it away but she puts up her hand. It was quite funny in a relatively dark film otherwise.

11. Harry is Secretly the Villain?:

Chamber of Secrets had a lot of traditional mystery plots. The major among all of them was who, actually, was the heir of Salazar Slytherin. As we all can remember, that because of Harry’s ability to speak to snake’s, many students feared him to be the one. Now, in one of the deleted scenes, Harry actually confesses his fear of being the heir to his friends. The scene shows Harry feeling completely alienated and lost, as he is worried, he might be doing all the things happening without being aware of them. However, he is reassured by Hermione of no such thing.

10. Bill’s warning:

In the last Harry Potter movie, there is a deleted scene where the oldest Weasley brother warns the trio about trusting a goblin. He tells them specifically that if you have struck a bargain then make sure you stick to it or you won’t be forgiven. He is trying to tell them not to trust a goblin and be careful. This scene foreshadows what happens in Bellatrix’s vault later in the movie when Griphook leaves the trio to fend for themselves.

9. “Clearly Hermione knows…”

We all remember the scene when Snape and Harry first meet in Harry’s first potions class. Snape thinks Harry is not paying attention when he is actually noting down all the things coming out of the professor’s mouth. Snape then asks Harry many questions to which Harry Potter has no answer but Hermione is dying to show her knowledge. In an extended version of the scene Harry actually says to Snape that “clearly Hermione knows and it would be a pity not to ask her”. Snape is clearly not amused by this and the conflict between him and Snape takes birth after this.

8. Ron and Harry’s bond:

In another scene from the very first movie, Harry Potter is sitting alone far away from the rest of the Gryffindor house where everyone is eating. Ron notices this and comes to ask Harry if he wants to play chess or visit Hagrid? Harry replies “no” without even looking at him. Ron then tells him not to think so much about the mirror of erised as there is something wrong with that mirror. This simple scene shows how much Ron cares about his best friend and does not have the emotional range of a teaspoon!

7. Luna at her best:

At the beginning of the last movie, we see Harry Potter kneeling before Dobby’s grave as he is clearly having a hard time dealing with Dobby’s death. In a deleted scene Luna comes there with a suitcase ready to go back to Hogwarts. Harry tells her it is not the same place anymore to which she replies “neither am I”. This scene is so beautiful and shows how Luna always understood the importance of change and went through it herself through the course of time.

6. Aberforth’s despair:

In the last movie, we are introduced to Aberforth who is Dumbledore’s brother. The two brothers did not get along which is why we never really hear about him before this. In a deleted scene we can see Aberforth telling Harry not to do any job given to him by Albus. Hermione tells him how Dumbledore cared a lot about Harry to which he replies that the people his brother cared about tend to hurt deeply. He is talking about his sister Ariana who died because of Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s duel a long time ago. This incident made Aberforth hate his own brother till the end.

5. Romione at its cutest:

Ron and Hermione don’t get much time as a couple in the series as they are living in dark times and there is no time to be all adorable. In a deleted scene, however, Ron is skipping stones on a lake when Hermione enters and tries to do the same. This is one of the few things she is really bad at so Ron tries to teach her to do it. The scene is adorable and adds a little light to the otherwise darkest movie of the series.

4. The Gothic brilliance:

Half-Blood Prince may not be the best movie of the series but it was adapted from the best book. Something that the movie got right is the spooky feel and darkness the wizarding world experiences. In a deleted scene we see this clearly when there is beautiful spooky music in the background by Flitwick’s choir and we see the corridors and halls of Hogwarts. There is a close up of Snape in his office looking at the dark sky. The scene clearly portrays Sir Alan Rickman’s amazing expressions and gives an insight into Snape’s internal conflict. They should have kept this in the movie!

3. Harry and Petunia:

We never see the Dursleys show any affection towards Harry but the fact remains that aunt Petunia is Harry’s aunt and there must have been a time when she loved her sister. This scene from DH part 1 clearly shows how Petunia once loved her younger sister and even though she never showed it she did care about Harry. Before leaving Privet Drive Petunia tells Harry “You didn’t just lose a mother that night in Godric’s Hollow, I lost a sister…” The scene is so beautiful it will bring you to tears and think differently about Aunt Petunia.

2. ” I don’t think you are a waste of space…”

Another parting scene that was cut is between Harry and Dudley. When the Dursleys are leaving Dudley actually comes to say goodbye to Harry and says “I don’t think you are a waste of space”. This is the best thing Dudley has ever said to his cousin and also shows how he started to care for him as they both did grow up together. This scene was taken from the book and was crucial to explain Dudley’s character.

 1. Lupin and Tonks:

A couple that clearly gets no onscreen time is Lupin and Tonks. Tonks loved Lupin and a short deleted scene shows this when Tonks come to Lupin’s aid. He objects saying that she should have stayed home with their son to which she replies “It is you that needs me tonight”. The scene is heartbreaking as we know what happens next and they both die fighting together. This scene should have been in the movie to establish this relationship and give this love story a chance.

There were a lot of deleted scenes in all the seven parts of Harry Potter films but these were some of the major ones. If you would like to suggest some others that should be added, please let us know your thoughts in the comments.
