How accurate are the science fiction movies that we watch? Most of the science fiction movies make up facts to in order to justify the narrative. Interstellar

When humanity is under the threat of survival, NASA sets a journey in search of a futuristic world where humans can survive. Except the ending, all most everything shown in the movie is scientifically accurate, including the variations of time both in space and ground. The Martian
The Martian is directed by Ridley Scott and was released in the year 2015. The star cast of the movie includes Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, and Kate Mara. The movie is based on Andy Weir’s 2011 novel of the same name. The movie tells the story of an astronaut who is left behind on Mars as his fellow astronauts presumed him to be dead. The cultivation of potatoes in space and the survival techniques shown in the film are accurate enough. The actual time required for space travel and the duties of the astronauts were clearly and accurately depicted in the movie.
Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange is directed by Scott Derrickson and was released in the year 2016. The movie tells the story of a neurosurgeon who is on a journey to learn mystic arts to gain back the ability to use his hands properly which he had lost in an accident. Blade Runner
Blade Runner is directed by Ridley Scott and was released in the year 1982. The star cast of the movie includes Harrison Ford, Sean Young, Rutger Hauer, Edward James Olmos, and Daryl Hannah. The movie tells the story of a Blade Runner who is on a mission to hunt down the genetically engineered replicates entering the earth. The Replicant portions shown in the movie is not true, but many specialists are of opinion that the future portrayed in the movie is accurate and we would have to face similar situations in the future. Another interesting fact is that a European company is currently working on developing flying cars and we have already seen the flying cars in the movie.
Arrival
Arrival is directed by Denis Villeneuve and was released in the year 2016. The star cast of the movie includes Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Tzi Ma. The movie is based on ‘Story of Your Life’, a short story by Ted Chiang. The movie tells the story of our first contact with aliens and Amy Adams plays the role of a linguist who assigned with the task of communicating with them. Scientist Stephen Wolfram and his son Christopher helped the crew to depict the events shown in the movie in the most accurate way. Many experts agree to the fact that what’s shown in the movie, including the communication portions is true to a certain extent.
Deep Impact (1998)
The amateur astronomer discovers a giant comet that would destroy the earth. The next thing that any govt would do is to stop the giant space rock by firing missiles. What happens next is again something really scientific. The fragments from the comet splash down in the Atlantic Ocean and trigger the tsunami. A NASA scientist said:
“[Deep Impact is] almost a lesson,” “To find a movie that was accurate to asteroid physics was a nice surprise.” He added.
Lastly, the movie also predicted the first black president of USA.
Minority Report (2002)
The pre-crime systems seen in the movie are already being tested out in the US. The movie which was based in the year 2054 has been slated to be one of the most accurate sci-fi flicks by the critics considering the realistic environment and the display of technology. Many more things featured in the movie has already been a reality now like the motion tracking computer interfaces, retinal scanners and much more. Many are also in development.
Her (2013)
The movie beautifully portrays what a relationship between an AI and a man would look like. It gave a vision of the future relationships. It has also garnered praise from authorities like Ray Kurzweil (a renowned computer scientist) who said,
“[Her] compellingly presents the core idea that a software program (an AI) can – will – be believably human and lovable. This is a breakthrough concept in cinematic futurism in the way that The Matrix presented a realistic vision that virtual reality will ultimately be as real as, well, real reality.”
Gattaca (1997)
The movie shows a society where geneticists were inspecting human embryos and discarding those with some undesirable traits. This thing has become a reality now though not exactly, the scientists have successfully achieved the feat in manipulating the gene sequence in worms and mice which gave them super-strength. Their next step is to make designer babies that won’t suffer from major diseases and would also have some special traits.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1969)
The director of the movie, Stanley Kubrick, consulted many scientists and authorities to put everything in place. From the depiction of centrifugal force, the proportionate sizing of the spacecraft, length of time to reach Jupiter to the snacks of the astronauts, everything was well researched and completely scientific. It’s considered as the greatest scientific film in the cinema history.
