Game of Thrones: A Huge Character Wasted On TV Show And It’s Not Cool
The Game of Thrones season 7 episode titled “Stormborn” demonstrated the entire strength of Daenerys Targaryen including Lady Olenna of House Tyrell, Ellaria Sands of House Dorne and Yara Greyjoy of House Greyjoy.
Yara was of the view that they should attack King’s Landing right now as they have a huge advantage at this point with standing armies, massive fleet and three giant dragons besides them, but Tyrion Lannister (Hand of the Queen) disagreed with them and advised Dany to play it strategically. He put it eloquently: “You are not here to be Queen of the ashes”. Finally, Daenerys decided to go with Tyrion and divided the forces to fulfill separate objectives.
On one hand, the unsullied would attack the Casterly rock and on the other Greyjoys and Dornish fleet would lay siege to the city and meet the Tyrells outside King’s Landing. On one hand, the unsullied would attack the Casterly rock and on the other Greyjoys and Dornish fleet would lay siege to the city and meet the Tyrells outside King’s Landing.
But everything went to shit as Euron Greyjoy threw a monkey ranch at their well-laid plans. He smashed the entire Greyjoy fleet and set it on fire, killed two sand-snakes and captured Yara Greyjoy, Ellaria Sands, and the remaining sand snake.
He will present this as a gift to Cersei to prove his worth and loyalty in exchange for her hand in marriage. How it will work out…we have to wait and watch.
In the last season of Game of Thrones, we saw the Kingsmoot ceremony at Iron Islands, where all the noblemen gathered to choose their next leader who would sit on Seaston chair and control the vast amount of Iron Borne resources in terms of men and fleet of ships. It is much like “The Great Council” ceremony in Westeros where great Lords can jointly decide who should be the next King of the realm.
At first, only Yara Greyjoy (daughter of Balon Greyjoy) came forward to stake a claim, but her claim was rejected by the elders until Theon Greyjoy (the only son alive of Balon Greyjoy) supported his sister’s claim to power. But then came Uncle Euron Greyjoy (also known as Crow’s eye) who was supposedly lost in the sea.
He admitted to everyone that he is the one who killed Balon Greyjoy as he perceived him to be a spineless leader, and slammed Theon for being captured by Ramsay and even losing his manhood. He was soon anointed as the Captain of Iron Islands who would sit on Seaston chair, as Iron Borne worship Drown God he was literally drowned in the sea, but he managed to come out alive.
Meanwhile, Yara and Theon ran away from Iron Islands taking away a huge fleet of battle-tested ships. He then ordered all men and women at Iron Islands to build 1000 ships for him.
The biggest question since then has been – When will Theon Greyjoy ever redeem himself? Will he die a coward? A section of fans believed that he redeemed himself last season when he saved Sansa Stark from the clutches of Ramsay Bolton and helped her escape Winterfell. But we know that it wasn’t such a heroic act that can be counted as his redemption.
All of the Game of Thrones fans were in a state of shock as Theon Greyjoy chickened out yet again when his uncle had his sister by her neck.
He chose to just jump into the sea doing nothing which baffled me as I thought maybe Theon is really the man he should have been, maybe he will protect his sister but he became reek again. Some people thought he played it right as if he had stepped up, Euron would have slit her throat.
In the Game of Thrones books, he is the captain of the ship called “Silence” crewed by mutes whose tongues were ripped out by him. He proved that he is one the deadliest pirates in the whole of Westeros and must be taken seriously by Daenerys from now on.
George R.R Martin revealed a larger plot from “Winds of Winter” where Damphair (another brother of Balon Greyjoy) has visions of Euron Greyjoy conquering Westeros, wearing a crown, sitting on the Iron throne along with Dany. Guess, the TV show has really moved on a divergent path and is unlikely to converge ahead.
