In the season 3 finale, we saw Barry Allen left Central City and his loved ones behind and went into the speed-force with his mother. After they defeated Savitar with the help of Jay Garrick (Henry Allen dopple-ganger), the speed force became extremely volatile and unstable, led to massive earthquakes that wreaked havoc upon the common folk. It required a powerful speedster to stabilize the effects and Flash volunteered as he held himself guilty of creating Flashpoint timeline.
Many fans are speculating that the show-makers may follow a comic-book plot in which Barry Allen turn to the dark side and become a villain.
In comics, when Flash returned to the land of the living after Speed Force afterlife, he started killing fellow speedsters with a mere touch. In fact, Barry Allen placed his hand on Savitar’s shoulders and reduced him to ash. Hence, he became the beginning and also the end of the speed force itself.
When Barry and Wally went to investigate the lightning storm, something totally unexpected happened. They uncovered that there is a need for a new Black Flash. Black Flash is literally the agent of death, as he carries speedsters and returns them to their source i.e speed force.
In the comics, Wally West defeated him by racing to the end of time where death is meaningless. He’s like grim reaper for speedsters. He isn’t really a villain, in fact, Barry Allen took the mantle of Black Flash in the comics. In season 2 finale, when time wraiths carried Zoom through the portal as he distorted the rules of the speed force, his body disintegrated and his face turned eerily black. In Legends of Tomorrow season 2, Black Flash tracked down Reverse Flash as he committed heinous crimes against time.
As of now, we don’t know if such a twist is possible in season 4. But given the willingness of writers to turn protagonists into troubled antagonists, it’s a likely possibility. CHEERS!
