Game of Thrones: A Spin-Off series in the Works?

HBO has confirmed that Game of Thrones season 7 will only have seven episodes, following in the footsteps of AMC’s Breaking Bad, Mad Men which shortened their run. Also, season 8 will be the series finale. The catch is that episodes will be longer than usual, so the amount of content remains the same.

HBO Programming head said “The question is: How much beyond seven are we going to do?

David Benioff told The Variety magazine “I think we’re down to our final 13-15 episodes after this season. We’re heading into the final lap. That’s the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that’s what we’re looking at.” Speaking to Deadline.com, he said “It’s two more seasons we’re talking about. “From pretty close to the beginning, we talked about doing this in 70-75 hours, and that’s what we’ll end up with. Call it 73 for now.”

“We’ve known the end for quite some time and we’re hurtling towards it. Those last images from the show that aired last night showed that. Daenerys is finally coming back to Westeros; Jon Snow is king of the North and Cersei is sitting on the Iron Throne. And we know the Night King is up there, waiting for all of them. The pieces are on the board now. Some of the pieces have been removed from the board and we are heading toward the end game.” He further added “It’s not supposed to be an ongoing show, where every season it’s trying to figure out new story lines. We wanted it to be one giant story, without padding it out to add an extra 10 hours, or because people are still watching it. We wanted to something where, if people watched it end to end, it would make sense as one continuous story.”

But off-late there is a chat about the possible prequel to the Song of Ice & Fire story, but it has to make sense creatively. What are the possible options for a spin-off series? The front-runner is the series of fantasy novellas by George R.R Martin called as “Tales of Dunk and Egg”, but HBO doesn’t have the rights for these books. Another option is a complete history of Targaryen family in general or Targaryen civil war in particular. The last option is Robert’s rebellion but since the current story has flashbacks, it’s unlikely that they will go in this direction. CHEERS!
