Captain America Civil War: 7 Major Comic-Book Easter-Eggs

It was the most anticipated superhero movie of 2016, equivalent to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for the Marvel fans. It hasn’t opened to the entire world yet, but the global box office collections have already crossed $350 million. The reviews are largely positive, rotten tomatoes rating stands at 91% currently. But it couldn’t break the opening weekend record of Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191 million), let alone The Avengers ($207 million). Due to loss of property and human life as a result of Avengers actions, General Ross pointed out the need for maintaining oversight through Sokovia Accords to be ratified by 117 nations, which will appoint a special UN Panel to keep checks and balances on Avengers missions. This created deep fissures among Tony Stark and Captain America resulting into the division of Avengers into two camps: Team Iron Man and Team Cap.

Here’s a list of comic-book easter eggs planted in the movie:

Rumlow’s Outfit:

In the first scene, Captain America is chasing someone by the name Rumlow who is wearing an outfit similar to Crossbones who is a big villain in the Marvel Comics.

Tony Stark using the phrase “timely gift” while giving a pen to Steve Rogers:

Tony Stark

Tony Stark almost got Steve Rogers to sign the papers until he disclosed that Wanda Maximoff is under house arrest with Vision. The old name of Marvel comics is Timely comics, it was changed in 1960’s.

Falcon’s Red Wing:

The new tech toy of Falcon is called as “Red Wing”, in Marvel comics Red wing is actually a red falcon when Captain America told Scarlett witch to throw him into the building as practiced, it’s their version of fast-ball special when colossus used to throw Wolverine in X-men comics.

Giant Man:

We have seen Scott Lang putting up his giant act in the Ant-man movie, he repeats it in Civil war as well. It was Hank Pym who became a giant man for the first time in 1963 comic-book title “Tales to Astonish” 49.

Mechanical vs Organic Web-shooters:

The new Spiderman played by Tom Holland is using mechanical web-shooters, an upgraded suit made by Tony Stark as a gesture to lure him into Avengers. In Marvel comics, on several occasions, Spiderman has been offered membership into Avengers, but he often turns it down.

Sharon Carter’s Camaraderie with Cap:

She is a niece of Peggy Carter and a member of Joint Task force in Berlin, harbor feelings for Steve Rogers, shared intel with him which is as good as committing treason. The plot was true to the comics, she was originally younger sister of Peggy.

Baron Zemo vs Zemo:

In the movie, he is referred to as Zemo who lost his entire family at Sokovia, he is a part of a death squad who is baying for Avengers’ blood. In the comics, he is known as Baron Zemo who creates Masters of evil, which is a likely scenario in the marvel cinematic universe.
