Black Panther was a groundbreaking masterpiece! There were many things that worked excellently in the movies and one of the reasons why the movie stands out and shines brightly is how amazingly, all the characters have been incorporated in the movies. Also, the story of the movie was beautifully crafted by Director Ryan Coogler. Right from the start to the end, every element worked just perfect and what the Director wanted to deliver was delivered by so many powerful performances throughout the movie.
This movie was a complete package as it had everything! It had emotion, it had heart, it had humor, it had drama, it had mind-blowing action, and all over, it had a great plot. What really worked was the ending of the movie, and the way Director Coogler chose to end it. Here’s how the movie actually ended:
In the heat of the epic climactic battle that took place between Black Panther and the Golden Jaguar, Killmonger gets stabbed in the heart. Well, T’Challa being a kind and noble king offers to heal Killmonger, in order to give him a second chance, but he chooses to die for his cause instead of as he pulls out the spear that was keeping him alive and dies instantly. Looking at the cause for which Killmonger died, and how wrong the customs of Wakanda have been as they hid in the shadows to protect themselves, while their community throughout the world suffers, T’Challa now strives to change and write the wrongs that his ancestors have done. That’s why T’Challa goes to Oakland where his uncle N’Jobu died and decided to help the people of his community and the world from there on.
Then, In the very end, in the mid-credits scene, T’Challa announces that Wakanda will now come out of the shadows, and share all its resources and knowledge with the rest of the world. Then in the post credits scene, we see Bucky being woken up from Cryogenesis, who is then confronted by Shuri, who tells him that there is a lot to catch up, setting up the Avengers: Infinity War.
This ending worked because it gave us a true sense of what Killmonger had suffered in life and why he was so determined to take the throne. Also, it is because of Killmonger’s extreme ways, T’Challa now has a change of Hearts and is willing to do what Killmonger wanted in the right way. But, what if things would have been different? The movie could have had a totally different impact on the audiences. Director Coogler had considered to end the movie in a different way and he also had a different order of Post Credits scenes. Here’s what he said:
“We played with a lot of different ways to end it. We went back and forth about the U.N., and we had a version where it was the U.N. before the scenes in Oakland at the end. But we really kind of settled on how do we want the movie to end? And it came back to that symmetry, and it came back to the most moving version of it. That’s what we were asking ourselves, ‘Who’s more moved emotionally, that kid or the people sitting in the U.N.?’ Who is that a bigger deal to for T’Challa to walk in, who’s more connected to him?”
He continued:
“As a kid, growing up, when you see somebody who looks like an older version of you doing something awesome, it’s like, ‘What’s going on?’ That’s kind of what that moment… We kind of went with the less distilled emotion, and the U.N. makes sense afterwards for where Wakanda could be going in the future of this universe,”
This totally made sense and the ending we got was the better choice since it allowed the movie to end on a higher note. The only advantage we as fans would have got if the UN scene that came in the mid-credits was actually before the Oakland scene was that we would have gotten an extra Post Credits scene to enjoy.
