When Will New DCU Casting Begin? James Gunn Answers

The DC Universe is gearing up for some big announcements, as James Gunn, the architect of the DC Universe, has revealed that new DCU casting for the new heroes will be coming in the next six months. Gunn and Peter Safran, who are in charge of DC’s movies and TV shows, recently announced the first ten projects that are part of their DC Universe Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. While some familiar faces like Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller and Peacemaker were revealed to be returning, the DC Universe has yet to cast its new heroes.

Gunn took to Twitter to answer a fan’s question about when casting announcements for the new heroes in the DC Universe reset would be coming. He confirmed that at least one major casting update would be coming in the next six months. While it is unclear which project the casting update will be for, it is possible that it could be for the animated series Creature Commandos or the Waller show, which seem like they could be finished first.

Another possibility is that the major casting announcement could be for the new Superman actor. With a release date set for 2025, Superman: Legacy is one of the projects that will likely begin production next year. As such, casting for the role of Superman will need to be done soon, and an announcement could come in a number of different ways. One possible way that the announcement could be made is through a replica of the DCU slate reveal. Gunn and Safran could hold another private event for the press, with the DCU reveals being shared by Gunn in a special video announcement to the public the following day.

While this tactic did mostly work for the DCU Chapter One reveal, the full slate did leak a few hours after the private event ended. As such, Gunn and Safran may not want to take chances on something like their Superman casting leaking beforehand. Another option could be a major event for the public, similar to Marvel’s use of San Diego Comic-Con. Gunn’s six-month timeframe likely means that the new DC Universe actors will be revealed during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, which takes place in July. SDCC is known to be the meeting spot for all things superhero, and Gunn could want to replicate Marvel’s impressive use of the event in the DCU’s favor.

If an SDCC reveal does not happen, Gunn could revive the DC FanDome event, which was fully geared toward DC fans. This would be another way to present the new DCU castings in an event that is solely focused on DC projects. Regardless of how the announcement is made, it is clear that the DC Universe is gearing up for a big reset. With Gunn and Safran in charge, the DCU is poised to take on Marvel in the superhero movie and TV show realm. Fans are eagerly anticipating the casting announcements for the new heroes, and with the promise of at least one major update in the next six months, they won’t have to wait much longer to find out who will be joining the DC Universe.
