DC’s Newest Movie ‘The Death of Superman’ Trailer Released Online!!!

The DC Extended Universe might be in deep trouble but the animated franchise has been hitting home runs as long as we could remember. DC Animation has given us absolute gems like Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Flashpoint, and Justice League: War. The newest entry to the award-winning DC animated club is The Death of Superman. Warner Bros. greenlit the project last year and the studios have been hard at work to make it happen ever since. Death of Superman is only one part of the planned Death and Return of the Man of Steel cycle that is set for release this summer. And the trailer for the first part is out. DC’s Newest Animated Movie ‘The Death of Superman’ Trailer has been released online and it is as stunning as it could ever be!!!

Death of Superman

Just yesterday, the studio released an image of Superman’s torn and battered cape fluttering in the wind. That picture is a clear homage to Superman #75. That issue saw the death of the last Son of Krypton for the first time in comic book history.  Superman #75 was the final chapter of the acclaimed ‘Doomsday’ Storyline. The image of Superman’s torn cape braving the winds as Superman’s lifeless body is held by Lois Lane as the other heroes look down in utter regret has become one of DC’s staple images, featuring in several issues, video games and even in the movies ever since the issue was published 26 years ago. That particular cover was colored by Glenn Whitmore with Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding providing the artwork.

Death of Superman

The “Death of Superman” arc is one of comic book history’s best selling story arcs of all time. It outsold itself in all the comic book retail stores within a matter of days. That was during a time when the comic book industry was dying due to insufficient sales and profits. It not only managed to revive DC’s comic book industry from the ground up but was also featured in several mainstream newspapers and media outlets solely for the reason of killing the one guy everyone thought can never die. The comic book storyline showed us that even the most invincible of heroes can not only taste defeat but also meet his tombstone because the comic book universe are filled with uncertainties and no one lives forever.

Death of Superman

The animated production will be very different from that of the comic book arc. Doomsday has been the object of another animated DC feature film called Superman: Doomsday (another great movie). The producers say that Death of Superman will be significantly different and feature more on Clark and his understanding of the word ‘hero’ than his fight with the megalomaniac killing machine.

The movie will also feature a Justice League with vastly different members. Hawk Girl is also reportedly going to feature in this one which is a clear callback to the animated Justice League that aired on CN, which featured Hawk Girl was a full-fledged founding member of the Justice League. The movie does take several liberties since it has to show both the death and resurrection of the Man of Steel within its 70minute time frame. WB’s Home Entertainment production is gearing up for a set of Direct to DVD animated movie releases and Death of Superman just so happens to be the first one. Death of Superman will be followed by The Reign of Supermen.

The official movie synopsis for The Death of Superman is:

Death of Superman

“When a hulking monster emerges from an underground resting place and begins a mindless rampage, the Justice League is quickly called in to stop the colossal force of nature. But it soon becomes apparent that only Superman can stand against the monstrosity that has been nicknamed Doomsday. Battling their way throughout America, the two fight to a standstill as they reach the heart of Metropolis. Going punch for punch, Superman finally ends the threat of Doomsday as he throws one last punch and collapses forever.”

Are you excited for the new DC animated movie? We sure are. Can WB pull of another award-winning animated feature film? Given their track record in this area, we have to expect this will be another yet homerun for DC.
