George RR Martin Confirms 2 More Game of Thrones Spinoffs In Development

George R.R. Martin, the author of the Game of Thrones book series, has spoken out about the latest Game of Thrones spinoffs, giving fans some insight into the status of previously-rumored shows. With last year’s House of the Dragon proving to be a big hit with audiences, HBO has announced a Jon Snow sequel show, an Aegon the Conqueror prequel, and the official greenlighting of a Dunk & Egg show titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.

However, with all of these Game of Thrones spinoffs in development, fans have been wondering about the status of other reported shows, and Martin himself has taken to his blog Not a Blog to offer some updates. He discussed the long process of getting the greenlit Dunk & Egg show off the ground and offered some encouraging news specifically about previously-rumored shows centered on Princess Nymeria of the Rhoyne and the Sea Snake, and generally about other live-action and animated shows that have been reported.

Martin emphasized that development takes time and that other spinoffs are still in development, despite reports that some have been killed or abandoned. He said,

“The Nymeria show is still in development. So is the Sea Snake show. Just had a great week on that one, working with writers. And there are others, both live-action and animated. How many will get the greenlight like Dunk & Egg? Impossible to say. How long will it take? It depends.”

If HBO ultimately follows through on plans for all its reported Game of Thrones spinoffs, it will have no fewer than eight shows going on some kind of rotation. While it makes sense for the network to go hard on GoT-related content, given the need to supply the recently-rebranded Max streaming service along with the actual HBO network, it’s also fair to wonder where the limit is on the number of viable shows that can finally be produced. Martin’s cautionary words about the process of development also serve as a reminder that not all reported spinoffs will eventually deliver the content that was promised.

Not all greenlit projects are guaranteed to see the light of day, and franchise fatigue can be a problem. Martin emphasized that development takes time and that other spinoffs are still in development, despite reports that some have been killed or abandoned. The Game of Thrones universe has proven to be a successful franchise for HBO, with House of the Dragon being a hit with viewers. But, as Martin warns, circumstances can change suddenly, and actions in response to changing circumstances can sometimes be rather drastic and disappointing.

With Martin’s updates, it seems that Game of Thrones fans can continue to look forward to more content from the world of Westeros. However, it remains to be seen which spinoffs will make it to the screen and how successful they will be with audiences. Nonetheless, it’s clear that HBO is determined to keep the Game of Thrones flame burning, and fans can expect plenty of new adventures in the years to come.
