Tom Cruise Performs Death-Defying Stunt in Mission: Impossible 8

Mission: Impossible fans have eagerly awaited the release of the franchise’s eighth installment, Dead Reckoning Part Two, which promises to be the final chapter in the long-running action-adventure spy series. With major plot details being kept under wraps, the film’s trailers, and official set photos have hinted at some of the franchise’s most epic action set pieces yet. The most exciting stunt in Mission: Impossible 8 involves franchise star Tom Cruise walking on the outside of an airplane while in mid-air.

At the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference, Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish couldn’t help but praise the upcoming film and its predecessor, Dead Reckoning Part One. Bakish called the first film in the two-part series “insane” and a “thrill ride,” and he teased a few details about the upcoming stunt that has everyone talking. “Tom’s walking on the outside of an airplane — in the air, not on a green screen. It’s quite the ride,” Bakish revealed.

Of course, Cruise is no stranger to performing dangerous stunts in his films. In fact, the actor continuously pushes the limits of what’s possible in cinema with thrilling sequences that are grounded in realism. For instance, in previous installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Cruise has scaled the tallest building in the world, broken an ankle while attempting to leap from one rooftop to another, and set a record for the longest breath-hold while filming an underwater scene in Rogue Nation. Although Kate Winslet subsequently broke his record in Avatar: The Way of Water, Cruise is still known for his dedication to creating the most elaborate stunts on film.

Newly shared set photos from the upcoming movie reveal that Cruise is continuing this tradition. Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie has taken to social media to tease behind-the-scenes images of filming a V-22 Osprey while in mid-air, as well as a photo taken from the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier, giving thanks to the military personnel who helped with the project. These images correspond with a recent report that had the film engaged in a “complex shoot” off the coast of Italy.

The upcoming stunt in Dead Reckoning Part Two is expected to involve Cruise taking to the skies in the tilt-rotor V-22 aircraft. Due to the vehicle’s ability to hover like a helicopter, the production team can manipulate the Osprey to move at speeds comfortable for Cruise to perform the elaborate sequence. However, the death-defying airplane stunt is just one of many expected action sequences in Dead Reckoning Part Two.

Overall, fans are eagerly anticipating the release of Dead Reckoning Part Two, which promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the Mission: Impossible franchise. With Cruise’s dedication to creating the most elaborate stunts on film and McQuarrie’s knack for directing high-octane action sequences, fans can expect to be on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
