The Marvel Cinematic Universe has given us some of the most amazing stories with a variety of projects. Phase 4 for MCU began last year and this was the very move that introduced us to a variety of new characters and events and concepts to be explored. But over the years there have been some serious plotholes in the narrative and that has actually led to some interesting fan theories. It seems that 2021 was no exception in terms of plotholes with the variety of multiple projects that we got to see this year. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest unanswered questions from MCU movies and shows of 2021.
How Does The Multiverse Work?
The Disney+ series Loki actually gave us some idea regarding how the concept of the multiverse works in the MCU. This was the very first project that gave a hint towards the concept that would be used in future projects. But none of the projects actually showed anything regarding how the multiverse actually works. We even got an animated series What If…? that actually explored the multiverse and every possibility in it. But just like most of the characters in the MCU, we don’t know the principle of the multiverse and this is still left to be explored.
Why Didn’t Wenwu Fly Into Ta-Lo?
Quite early in Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, we find out that Wenwu knew about the secret location of Ta-Lo. Later in the movie, Shang-Chi and his friends manage to get into Ta-Lo with the help of Maurice. Whereas, Wenwu had to find the window that opens each year when the path to get into Ta-Lo is actually safe. This is something that actually helps with the plot but a simpler solution could have been Wenwu flying over the forest in a helicopter. There’s no clear answer for why he had to resort to the mythological means but magic could have been the very thing preventing any other means.
Has Hawkeye Retired?
There has been a trend in the MCU projects recently and that has seen some of the original characters being replaced by younger versions of them. Clint Barton had originally retired during the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron even though it wasn’t much successful. Almost everything we saw in the Disney+ series Hawkeye suggested that Hawkeye might actually be heading for retirement. But there are certain things in the movie that actually indicate otherwise as we see him having Pym-Tech arrows.
How Was Spider-Man’s Webbing Lasting So Long In Spider-Man: No Way Home?
One of the most exciting moments in No Way Home actually saw Spider-Man facing off against Doctor Strange. Peter manages to successfully outsmart Strange in the Mirror Dimension using geometry. He uses the webbing to get Doctor Strange trapped and later we found out that Strange was stuck there for 12 hours. But that is rather contradictory considering Spider-Man’s webbing is supposed to dissolve after a certain while. We saw in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man uses his webbing to hold Aaron Davis and later tells him it would dissolve in two hours. It makes no sense that Doctor Strange would be hanging around Grand Canyon for six times that period.
How Do The Spells In Spider-Man: No Way Home Actually Work?
Before the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans had already started theorizing about how the spells for the multiverse might be working. But this wasn’t given much explanation except for the fact that the spell deals between the known and unknown. The spell was botched and that led to the chaos that we got to witness in the narrative. There is a chance we will get to understand the spell in a much better manner when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness comes out.
How Was The Earth Able To Survive Tiamut’s Emergence?
One of the most massive scenes from MCU this year saw the Emergence of Tiamut. The Eternals had discovered that there was a Celestial seed that was at the heart of the Earth. We actually got to see some of Tiamut already coming out and this was massive enough to have caused some destruction on Earth. But as Tiamut appears we don’t see it affecting the planet in any way possible. It is fairly obvious that the breach of the crust in that manner would have clearly caused some major damage but the planet appears to have survived all of it.
Why Didn’t The Masters Of The Mystic Arts Show Up In WandaVision?
The very first project that we got to see this year was the Disney+ series WandaVision which dived into some of the crazy lengths to which magic works in the MCU. There were a lot of plotholes in this show and the most interesting one amongst them was the absence of the Masters of the Mystic Arts in Westview. They are supposed to protect the world from some of the magical threats but they appear to have not focused on the fact that Wanda was using Chaos Magic. This could have had much larger implications in terms of the destruction it could have caused.
Why Didn’t The Masters Of The Mystic Arts Confront The Ten Rings?
It was made rather clear in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, that the main reason the Ten Rings was formed was because of Wenwu’s possession of the Ten Rings. He had used these Rings to wreak havoc all around the world and yet nobody came to stop him. We find out that when Shang-Chi used the Rings, they caused some sort of signal that made Wong aware of them. But it is rather surprising that the Masters of the Mystic arts did not come across the Rings before this.
Did The Red Guardian Actually Fight Captain America?
Black Widow introduced us to the larger aspects of the world in terms of the MCU using certain interesting characters. One of these characters was Red Guardian, who was like a father figure to Natasha and Yelena. He was the proof that there was indeed a Cold War in the MCU and that is what led to him becoming the Captain America knockoff. But one particular thing that Alexei says was that he had a fight with Steve Rogers once and that does not make sense considering Steve Rogers would have been on the ice during the Cold War period. This could mean that Alexei might have met some other person who was walking around as Captain America just to keep appearances.
How Much Is The World Aware Of The Events Of Avengers: Endgame?
The major concern in everyone’s mind following the events of Avengers: Endgame was how much the public knew about these events. We find out that certain characters or people aren’t aware of anything that transpired during those events and this includes Yelena herself. It is reasonable to imagine that people were made aware of everything that unfolded somehow. But there are still some rather important questions like what do people think about the absence of the Infinity Stones or where is Steve Rogers’ body.
How Did The Dweller In Darkness Manage To Manipulate Wenwu?
There are quite a few plotholes in almost every MCU project but another interesting plothole from this year has to be regarding how the Dweller in the Darkness managed to reach Wenwu. Later in the movie, we are told that it was trapped so that it cannot breach this dimension and sealed in an enchanted mountain. If those things are true then it would make absolutely no sense that the creature was able to reach Wenwu in order to get out. At the same time, there are some other people who could have been tempted instead of Wenwu like Tony Stark or Thor perhaps.
Why Are The Celestials In Eternals So Different From What We Have Seen In The MCU So Far?
The Celestials have been a part of the MCU for a long time now and they have only made a proper appearance with Eternals. Previously, we were introduced to a Celestial with Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 but here his powers are very different from Airshem or Tiamut’s. It was said that they had become extinct and there were theories making rounds that Ego might be lying about being a Celestial. It might be Marvel’s way of correcting the past by giving us a proper look at Celestials considering now they are going to be a significant part of the future of MCU.
So these were the biggest unanswered questions from MCU movies and shows of 2021.
