When Does The Peacemaker Series Take Place In The DCEU Timeline?

The Suicide Squad was released on 5 August to a massively successful critical response. Fans have gone crazy for the numerous characters that appeared even for a mere second in the film. It is the second-highest-rated DCEU movie sitting behind Wonder Woman, even though some may agree it is the best DCEU film. This was the Suicide Squad the fans were waiting for… This is the Suicide Squad we deserved (although David Ayer was denied his true representation). But after the film, we were left asking – When Does The Peacemaker Series Take Place?

With the movie exploring each of the essential characters, only two characters were left i.e., King Shark and Peacemaker. Even though King Shark gets to show his need for friends and struggle to make one, Peacemaker is left entirely unexplored. We are introduced to his character motivations and ideologies but nothing is shared about his past or his origin.

When Does The Peacemaker Series Take Place

Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker, could be easily identifiable for toting his IMI/Magnum Research Desert Eagle Mark XIX, which has an unusually long barrel pistol with a suppressor or a scope. It is made clear that he was not like the other supervillains and was rather personally hired by Amanda Waller to make sure that Rick Flagg or any other member of the team reveals the secrets on how Starro was a failed project by America. Later, this is what leads to him killing Rick Flagg and subsequently being shot by Bloodsport in a Mexican standoff.

Peacemaker lives by his name and he is ready to do anything to maintain the so-called peace. He keeps repeating it continuously, showing that he really doesn’t think he is wrong in his ideology and is rather confident that that is supposed to be the way any situation is to be dealt with. He says he doesn’t care if he has to kill children or women to make sure that the peace remains which sounds funny at first but upon realization, one can see he is not only words but he will actually commit to his words.

Warning: Spoilers for The Suicide Squad follow.

Even after being shot by Bloodshot, he survives in the post-credit scene where ARGUS agents  Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) and John Economos (Steve Agee) report for the “douchebag’s” next mission: “To save the f*cking world.”

Peacemaker will return in the upcoming series from creator James Gunn who says the spin-off, starring John Cena as the peace-keeping killer he plays in The Suicide Squad is a part prequel and part sequel to the DC Extended Universe movie.

When Does The Peacemaker Series Take Place

WarnerMedia announced Peacemaker for the HBO Max streaming service, revealing the action-comedy series will “explore the origins of…the master of weapons” from Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

“Through the story, you learn where Peacemaker came from,” Gunn told Variety about Peacemaker’s place in the DCEU timeline. “There’s a moment where Bloodsport talks about his father and what his father was like, and you cut to a shot of Peacemaker, and Peacemaker nods. That’s the seed of the entire Peacemaker series.”

The series unmasks Cena’s helmeted Christopher Smith, the son of Auggie Smith (Scorpion‘s Robert Patrick), revealing “where he came from, what he’s done, what that means to him, and where he’s going after all of this.”

For all his dirty deeds in The Suicide Squad, Smith is “not an evil person, he’s just a bad guy,” Gunn said. He seems sort of irredeemable in the film. But I think that there’s more to him. We didn’t get a chance to know him [in The Suicide Squad] in the way we get to know some of the other characters. And so that’s what the whole show is about. I needed eight episodes to do it, at least.”

“So that moment in [the bar] La Gatita Amable, when he’s dancing with [the team], and they’re becoming connected for the first time — that is an unusual feeling for him,” Gunn explained of a sequence in The Suicide Squad. The patriot is remorseful when he’s forced to kill fellow soldier Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) to prevent him from exposing secrets ARGUS Director Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) keeps to protect the American government.

“When he goes with his ideals over that sense of connection — his weird ideals, admittedly — he’s making that choice over his own emotions,” Gunn said. “The show is about that.”

So, the Peacemaker series will definitely give us the backstory upon Cena’s character. But since he has survived in the present day, a good chunk of events should also take place after The Suicide Squad.

The film is currently running in theatres and on HBO Max.
