The sequel to the 2020 film Sonic the Hedgehog was announced right after the movie fared well with the audience and received an okay critical response. The movie was a fun enjoyable family ride and the same is expected of the sequel. There has been a recent update that Sonic 2 adds Idris Elba as Knuckles.
Sonic 2 Adds Idris Elba
Sonic was a fun family movie that got decent reviews. It had a smooth sail post-release considering the amount of hate the first look had to go through. The initial designs of the character were heavily criticized by fans of the original Sonic the Hedgehog. The creators initially wanted to take a much realistic appearance and created a more human-like design. The critique came in like the teeth of the character were “too big” and it appeared as a whole to be “terrifyingly human”.
The creators realized their error and instantly delayed the release and made the required changes to get a positive response. It can be said that this actually helped the production as the film did become a lot more likable. Added to that was the absolutely animated performance by Jim Carrey as the antagonist Robotnik. But now, we’re going to get an even bigger sequel as two more Sonic-like beings are coming in. And one of them will be voiced by Elba!
What to Expect from Sonic The Hedgehog 2?
Taking all those into consideration one can say that Sonic 2 is running pretty smooth with its first look keeping everyone excited. The primary characters other than Sonic are supposed to make a return. This will include Tom Wachowski the Sherrif our furry hero befriends played by James Marsden. His wife Maddie Wachowski played by Tika Sumpter is also supposed to return. And last but not least Dr. Robotnik played by Jim Carrey who was last seen stuck in the mushroom planet will replay his role in the sequel.
A new addition to the cast was announced as Idris Elba. He will be playing the role of Knuckles the Echidna. Identified by his red anthropomorphic form, Knuckles is known as a good fighter as he has spiked hands to achieve that. This character was first introduced in the 1994 game Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Since then he has made multiple appearances along with Sonic in comic books, games, and even anime. Fun fact, Knuckles was introduced with the idea of having a rival persona in the Sonic world. Later he became more of a supporting character to Sonic.
Idris Elba as Knuckles
Idris Elba who recently played the role of Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad is a fair choice for the role. It was announced quite early this year that Knuckles will be appearing next to Sonic in the sequel but no specific actor was eyed for the role. It was assumed that Jason Momoa, who is currently filming the Aquaman sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, was being cast for the voice of Knuckles. As it has now been proven to be not the case, people are quite happy with Idris Elba for the role.
Idris Elba posted on his Instagram the following :
“Knock, knock….. #SonicMovie2 #Knuckles.”
This caption came along with a closeup of one of the Knuckles’ fists.
Considering the fact that Idris Elba has proven himself as being able to portray likable villains it’s quite fitting to see him voice this character. He has previously been associated with various other comic book films. He can only add to his work the opportunity of having worked in a video game movie adaptation. Idris Elba has proven his acting chops in both shows and movies at the same time to ensure that he can execute his roles to perfection.
Tails also Making his Debut
The first movie did give us a hint at Tails making an appearance. People can expect to learn more about Sonic’s world with fan-favorite characters making their debut in the sequel. More fun, more speed, and more thrill while at the same time double the excitement. Tails will be voiced by popular voice actor Colleen O’Shaughnessey. She has previously voiced the character in the Tails in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise since 2014.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 arrives in theatres in April 2022.
