MCU: Wolverine Actor Hugh Jackman Answers The Question About His Return

Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman was last seen donning the claws for the 20th Century Fox epic, Logan. It was directed by James Mangold. Marvel recently announced introduced the idea of rebooting the X-Men for the MCU. Fans have been working hard on who will be cast as the fan-favorite character of Wolverine. Hugh Jackman responded to one such question by a fan regarding Wolverine’s return to the MCU.

Wolverine on Screen

We first got to see Jackman’s Wolverine in the 2000 film X-Men. The portrayal was so beautifully done that the rage and the depth of the persona hooked the audience instantly. Jackman became an essential presence in every one of the X-men movies from Fox. He portrayed the character in the sequels X2 and then the X-Men: The Last Stand. X2 remains amongst one of the best sequels amongst superhero movies. The latter didn’t fare well for the franchise as the series director Bryan Singer left and it was directed by Brett Ratner.

Wolverine’s character evolved a lot using these movies. The relationship between Jean Grey and Logan became an essential feature. This character was so beloved that it was later continued in three solo films. X-Men Origins: Wolverine dealt with the origin of the character as the name suggests. Even though the movie didn’t fare well amongst the fans, especially the introduction of Wade Wilson (aka Deadpool). Its sequel titled Wolverine dealt with a completely original storyline that explored his character in a different manner.

The final film in this trilogy, Logan based on the Old Man Logan comic books gave us the farewell his character needed. The final moments of the movie left every one of the fans with tears in their eyes. It also showed the end of Patrick Stewart’s portrayal of Professor X which was also an emotional punch. The film was critically acclaimed and got nominated for a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar.

Hugh Jackman’s Response

In an interview with ScreenRant for his upcoming film Reminiscence, Jackman was asked about a possible return for Wolverine in the MCU. The actor responded with the following statement :

“It’s in my past, man. Don’t tell anyone, alright?

Let me just say one more thing. Because as I said that, there’s not a day goes by where I’m not unbelievably grateful for having been part of that MCU Universe. Particularly to be there at the beginning of it, and to watch it. To see Kevin Feige going from being an assistant to a producer and a mate of mine, to where he is today. And that was a role of a lifetime.

So, I don’t ever want people to feel that when I say I’m done, it’s a glib thing. It was one of the great chapters of my life.”

Possibilities of return

Hugh Jackman is one of the most recognizable Marvel actors thanks to his performance of Wolverine. Marvel recently introduced the concept of Multiverse in Phase 4. It seemed like there was a chance to bring him in would have been a great opportunity under those circumstances. Another one of 20th Century Fox’s characters, Deadpool will be making the move to MCU with Ryan Reynolds continuing with his portrayal.

With announcements about the introduction of X-Men and the mutants into MCU, fans hoped for a possible return of some of their favorite stars. Even though Jackman may be right in saying his portrayal of Wolverine is over, for now, one can never be absolutely sure. Marvel is known for its fan service and hence one can never rule out the chance for a cameo from Jackman. I believe that it could definitely happen in a future Secret Wars event.

Meanwhile, fans are already working into ideas of who might be the next choice for portraying the iconic character. From Daniel Radcliffe to Tom Hardy, everyone has been assumed to take the role next. Fanarts of all these stars in the character have been doing their circles on the web for a long time now. One must agree Tom Hardy kinda nails the personality and the gruff of Logan. But then would he be able to bring on to the screen what Jackman did. Whoever does take the role will have a massive responsibility on their hands.

Hugh Jackman can be seen in the upcoming film Reminiscence coming out on August 18. Would you like to see him play Wolverine in the MCU? Or do you want a new actor? Let us know in the comments.
