MCU Seemingly Gives A Backstory To All Black Widow Weapons

Natasha Romanoff’s story was finally told in Black Widow. While the movie talked about Nat’s life during Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, it managed to stay relevant to the present day scenario as well. She finally met with her Russian family of Red Guardian, Melina Vostokoff, and Yelena Belova. Together, they tackle their biggest demon, that is the Red Room and General Dreykov. Dreykov is the mastermind behind the Red Room. This is where Nat and every other Widow’s horror started. But the film had quite the revelation of Red Room. Moreover, Black Widow retcons Natasha’s weapons. Let’s dive into it!

Black Widow Weapons Get Retconned

Natasha Romanoff was first introduced back in Iron Man 2. She was a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative placed as a deep undercover agent in Stark Industries so she could watch over Tony Stark. Soon after that, she became Stark CEO Pepper Potts’ executive assistant. But she showed her prowess when she finally revealed herself to be a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent tasked to take down Justin Hammer’s security.

It was during this revelation that her comic book weaponry like her Widow’s Bite electroshock bracelets was seen. And when Natasha finally became an Avenger, she debuted electric batons to complement her go-to twin Glock sidearms. For a very long time, it was believed that she got her weaponry from S.H.I.E.L.D., with Stark Industries taking over as the supplier of Natasha’s equipment. But Black Widow has changed the source of her weaponry.

Alexei, the Red Guardian dropped some truth bombs on Natasha and Yelena when he was rescued from prison. He told them that Melina worked closely with Dreyko. Moreover, she was “the architect” of the Black Widow program and its brainwashing tech. Further, it was even revealed that it was Melina who helped Dreykov is building the Red Room.

So in the latter part of the film, Natasha and Melina pose as each other to infiltrate the Red Room. But it was seen that Melina has the familiar gear that she keeps in the secret arsenal of her St. Petersburg farmhouse. The arsenal included various firearms, the same electric batons Natasha has used, and even Photostatic Veils. This is the same veil that she used to fool Hydra leader Alexander Pierce in Avengers: The Winter Soldier. The other Widows in the Red Room also have Widow’s Bite bracelets and identical gear. So it seems pretty clear that Nat got her weaponry from Melina itself, the real mastermind behind it all.

How Did SHIELD Get Black Widow’s Tech?

Black widow successfully tied a loose thread that started back in 2012’s The Avengers. The Budapest mission that included Clint Barton (Hawkeye) and Nat was finally explained. It was the assassination of General Dreykov. It was ordered by S.H.I.E.L.D. as the price of Natasha’s defection. She had to prove her loyalty to the agency and hence, decided to blow up Dreykov’s building along with his daughter, Antonia.

However, it’s possible that Natasha brought the Red Room technology with her. And this is something that S.H.I.E.L.D. would have been too happy to possess. Only if they didn’t have it before. But after this, Natasha’s value was proven in terms of her loyalty and allegiance. Anyway, the technology created by Melina was replicated in abundance so that every Widow has it.

So after that, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s director Nick Fury could have replicated Natasha’s Red Room weapons like the Widow’s Bite. But one thing is for sure, and that the Red Room technology was in fact replicated in large amounts. In The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Sharon Carter was seen using the Photostatic Veil which was one surprising twist. Considering that Carter was a recluse and not welcomed to her homeland, how she got her hands on it only proved the status of the Power-Broker.

The origin of the Photostatic Veil was explained in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But the show is not MCU canon meaning Black Widow‘s retcon replaces it. So it is plausible that Nat brought back the technology from Red Room and shared it with Fury. Of course, Stark would have drastically changed it, but the real mind behind it is Melina. And with this, Natasha Romanoff proved her loyalty to everyone and become an integral part of S.H.I.E.L.D and the Avengers.
