Marvel made history with Avengers: Endgame. The movie concluded the Infinity Saga and provided immense closure to the fans. The ultimate Big Bad, Thanos, was seen in action in both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame both. He easily proved in both the movies that the entire team of Avengers is not enough to stop him. Thanos is the Mad Titan who believes in the balance of the Universe. To achieve that, he kills. To carry out his plans, he decided to gather all the Infinity Stones, and snap half the universe out of existence. He was able to do this in Avengers: Infinity War. Then in Endgame, the Stone were turned into atoms. And now, they should not return. Particularly, Doctor Strange should not get the Time Stone back.
Infinity War had many great sequences. One of them was Thanos vs. Doctor Strange. The Mad Titan was taken aback by Strange’s mystic abilities. This was a moment that proved his strength and power. At this moment, Thanos was just two Stones away from fulfilling his destiny, namely – Time and Mind Stone. If it was not for the Time Stone, then it would not have been possible for Thanos to acquire the Mind Stone as well because Wanda destroyed it along with Vision. The real question came to the surface when Strange willingly gave up the Stone to Thanos. Of course, he had seen more than 14 million possibilities.
Eventually, after almost half a decade, the Avengers won in Endgame. We know that the heroes used time travel to reclaim the Infinity Stones, in order to reverse the Snap. After the epic showdown between Thanos’ army and the Avengers, Steve Rogers went back in time again to place the Stones from the exact moment they were taken from. This was explained by the Ancient One that the Stones need to be returned to prevent multiple timeline branches. In Endgame, it was unveiled by Thanos that he destroyed all the Stones and resumed them to atom so that no one can ever wield the same power. So in the current timeline, the Time Stone does not exist.
The Eye of Agamotto is a primary weapon of the Masters of the Mystic Arts. In fact, Strange has used it to win against many of the antagonists. He willingly gave it away in Infinity War to save Iron Man’s life and hasn’t retrieved it since. So where does the Time Stone stand in the MCU now? Quantum Realm is a major part of the story now and is here to stay. It is fairly believable that Strange could go on a little adventure himself in Doctor Stange in the Multiverse of Madness to retrieve the Time Stone. Maybe in this little chaos, we might even get to see another interaction of the Ancient One and Strange. But this poses a major problem for Marvel’s storytelling in the future.
It is clearly revealed that Strange can use the Time Stone to foresee possibilities. He saw one win in all the 14 million-plus possibilities and made sure that he does what needs to be done in order for them to win. And on the other hand, time travel has its repercussions which were also revealed in the story. But now we all know that Strange can see the future, and have no effect on it at the same time. Even the Ancient One has done this which is how she’s able to see that Doctor Strange would not only be her successor but would also ultimately the best Sorcerer Supreme, and there weren’t any issues that came out of it. This heavily proves that this move has no harm whatsoever.
After this being established, it would be difficult for it not to be the default move when Doctor Strange is involved. If he is there, it will always be the primary thing to do – look at the possible outcomes and choose the best. Of course, this can lay out differently but fans will always question the storytelling if this is not done. Doctor Strange without the Time Stone is a possibility that will not follow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Maybe it will be revealed that this action is particularly saved for dire situations where the benefits of using it are bigger than the consequences as it affects the fabric of reality and cannot be used regularly.
This possibility can be seen in the sequel to Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives on March 25, 2022.
