Falcon and Winter Soldier: Wyatt Russell Explains the Difference Between the New and Old Shield

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has been the most recent series of Marvel. It has been a huge success. The show introduced us to many characters and this also included John Walker, played by Wyatt Russell. His character was announced as the new Captain America. But he received a lot of hate from Marvel fans. Recently, when he was answering a few fan questions, Russell was asked about how he felt when he was shooting with Chris Evans’ Captain America shield. The actor shared some interesting trivia.

Because Walker had the shield for a brief time, Wyatt shared a lot of interesting facts related to the relic. According to Pinkvilla, Russell answered some fan questions on the Marvel channel. He explained the difference between his shield and the shield of Chris Evans in previous Marvel films. While we didn’t get to know the new attributes of the shield within the MCU, Russell did reveal the physical difference between Evans’ shield and his shield on the set.

He said:

“The shield before this one was apparently heavier. Chris Evans was having to lift a much heavier shield than I did. He worked out all the kinks.”

Russell is well aware of the hate his character getting on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. But he doesn’t mind it. He told USA Today:

“It would be an honor, I guess, to be disliked in the Marvel universe. I don’t think there’s really been many MCU characters who’ve had quite the dilemma he’s had in terms of trying to fit into this sort of moralistic superhero world. He’s been thrust into this role as Captain America and he’s going to do it his way, and he wants to do it right. But his way is a very specific way that he has learned through being basically a trained human hunter. I mean, that’s what Marines are. They’re not Steve Rogers, they’re not the same. They’re not like Boy Scouts anymore. They’re a little bit more gnarly.”

Wyatt Russell has also opened up previously about asking for the Captain America suit of Chris Evans to get into the character for the show. But still, the studios provided him with a new one. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier had unleashed another side of John Walker and fans have been quite furious regarding his character. From the side of Russell, he maintains that he was aware that he would be hated in the MCU because of his character. He mentioned that getting hate from Marvel fans also feels like an honor.

In this show, John Walker is a U.S. soldier who has been selected to adopt the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers’ retirement. He was selected for this because of his achievements on the battlefield and his overall physical prowess. Steve Rogers handed the shield to Sam Wilson at the end of Avengers: Endgame to take on the title. But Sam relinquished the title before he could formally accept it. U.S. government appointed John Walker to the role. Steve and John have the same builds. The only difference is that Walker hadn’t been given a Super Soldier Serum before assuming the role.

The worlds of Steve Rogers and John Walker are different. Both of them worked with the same shield. But Episode 4 of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier proved a big difference in their personalities. At the end of that episode, Walker committed a crime that goes against everything the original Captain America stood for. After he used Cap’s infamous shield to murder a member of the Flag Smashers, Walker was stripped of his title and authority as Captain America. He fought Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes before that and the shield is now in Sam’s hands. In Episode 5, Walker is forced to face the consequences of his actions. But during the mid-credits scene, he was seen building a new shield from his medals and scrap metal. So, we will get to see him with a different shield in the coming episode.
