Army of the Dead is expected to begin a large zombie franchise. This includes an animated prequel series and a live-action prequel named Army of Thieves. Netflix recently released a new trailer of Army of the Dead. It unveiled the film’s ragtag group of mercenaries along with smart and much more evolved zombies. Amidst all this, they try to pull off a $200 million heist in a vault underneath the Las Vegas strip.
But there’s something quite intriguing about this film. The trailer showed us a Zombie White Tiger. But apparently, in Zack Snyder’s twisted world, birds are immune to the virus. During the Q&A event as part of the premiere of the latest trailer, Snyder said that birds are not affected by the zombie virus. Just after the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max, he is moving to Netflix with Army of the Dead. The film marks his return to the zombie genre after 17 years. He made his directorial debut with Dawn of the Dead which was of the same genre.
During the Q&A event held with the premiere of the new trailer, Zack revealed some other details about the film’s universe (Mainly about the animals that are susceptible to the virus). It seems that the animals within the Army of the Dead universe can be easily infected. Snyder said that the birds are the only creatures immune to the zombie virus. He added that it will be a big problem if they are not.
Snyder also said that we will get to see a lot of undead dogs in the animated prequel series. There is one thing to be said about the susceptibility of various animal species to any zombie virus featured within the genre. Zack’s Army of the Dead is not going on the Birdemic route. That movie showed a big swath of infected and murderous birds on humanity. The film looked very silly. The concept of winged undead creatures attacking from above proposes a realm where Bautista’s mercenary team might have a big and unattainable challenge to overcome.
Here’s what Snyder had to say:
“The only creatures immune from the zombie virus are birds. You know, birds have their own paths, and we tend not to try and get too much into their heads because you know, they’re birds. But yeah, that was the one thing that we decided in our science because you know, it is science, that birds would be immune.”
After directing three installments of DC Extended Universe, Snyder is looking, to begin with, a very different potentially successful film franchise. He is clearly putting the necessary thought into the Army of the Dead movie universe. This looks to be personally crafted by Snyder and not by the committee of studio executives. Zack’s unique vision will be seen when Army of the Dead will premiere in selected theatres on May 14 and on 21 May, only on Netflix.
The lead role of Scott Ward is being played by Dave Bautista. The supporting cast includes Ana De La Reguera as Cruz, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hunter Bly, Garret Dillahunt as Martin, Ella Purnell as Kate Ward, Theo Rossi as Burt Cummings, Tig Notaro as Marianne Peters, Omari Hardwick as Vanderohe, and Matthias Schweighöfer as Ludwig Dieter.
Here is the official synopsis of Army of the Dead:
“After a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries takes the ultimate gamble by venturing into the quarantine zone for the greatest heist ever.”
