Doctor Strange 2: Mordo Return-
Doctor Strange was a great film because of its cast. Sure, it did not have a massive roster of capable actors like most solo films these days do. But if you think about it, the film did have at least 7 big names and the talents of 3 actors – Mads Mikkelsen, Rachel McAdams, and even Scott Adkins were not used to their full potential. But on the heroes side, Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Tilda Swinton (The Ancient One), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Baron Karl Amadeus Mordo) and Benedict Wong (Wong) were all amazing. It’s needless to say that all 4 of these characters will return in Doctor Strange 2.
Tilda Swinton’s return hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but Marvel scooper Roger Wardell confirmed it right after he got a bunch of Avengers: Endgame scoops absolutely spot on. So, we’re assuming that she will be back as the Ancient One. The character that we didn’t have a confirmation for was Mordo, who we last saw in Doctor Strange’s post credits scene teasing his villainous turn for the sequel.
Ever since then, people have been asking where Mordo has been all this time. He was trying to get rid of wizards throughout the world, but was he snapped out of existence like trillions of living creatures throughout the Universe? If not, then what has he been up to? Where was he during the five years between Infinity War & Endgame? And if he was snapped, then why didn’t Doctor Strange & Wong bring him into the final Endgame battle?
So many questions need to be answered regarding Mordo. Chiwetel Ejiofor was recently interviewed by Comicbook.com’s Brandon Davis for his upcoming Netflix film – The Old Guard. Davis did touch the topic of MCU and Doctor Strange 2 in particular during the interview. First he asked about Mordo’s whereabouts during Endgame’s final battle. All that Ejiofor had to say about it was “I think all will be revealed.” He didn’t go into specifics, but his reply does confirm that Marvel has kept his fate and whereabouts a secret for a specific reason.
The one good thing that we did get from this interview was the confirmation upon Mordo’s return in Doctor Strange 2. Ejiofor validated that he has had a talk with Sam Raimi. Here’s what he told Brandon:
“He’s coming on. I’m very, very excited about that. Obviously, we’ve been sort of interrupted as the whole world has been in the pandemic but hopefully we are back on track with that and continuing quite soon, so I’m very excited about it.”
Well, it’s good to know that Baron Mordo will be back because people were beginning to speculate whether Mordo will return since Nightmare was initially being teased as the villain of Doctor Strange 2. So, will Mordo still help Doctor Strange against a villain like Nightmare. We’ll find out sooner or later.
As we’ve mentioned above, there’s a specific reason for why Ejiofor didn’t confirm anything about Mordo’s Endgame whereabouts. And that reason is probably Marvel’s upcoming film – Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Just about a month ago, we were given a plot description for Shang-Chi by Fandwomwire and that included Baron Mordo in it. The basic summary of the plot was that the Shang-Chi movie will follow a Mortal Kombat like tournament where people with extensive training and abilities will fight each other in order to acquire the 10 Rings of the Mandarin. And among the fighters, we’d also see Baron Mordo who probably needs the power rings to be able to take on Doctor Strange in the future. Perhaps Mordo’s appearance here will give us the answers to where he was during Infinity War and Endgame.
This plot description could turn out to be fake, but because it is all being kept a big secret, maybe it is actually true. And if it is, then Baron Mordo will appear in Shang-Chi first, before he moves to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022.
