Avengers: Endgame Directors Tell Us if Robert Downey Jr. & Chris Evans Will Return

Avengers: Endgame Directors have solved a whole lot of queries that we’ve had for Endgame. They’ve talked about what happened in the film, the reasoning behind it, and the motivation. Now they’ve also given us another major answer that everyone has been looking forward to. Will Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. return in the future of the MCU?

Well, Black Widow died but she’s gonna be back for a prequel story, and that’s gonna be it. The Hulk has sort of finished his story, but he could surely return for as many movies as Marvel would want him to. Thor is an Asgardian of the Galaxy now, and post that he could be back for Thor 4. Hawkeye has a solo series coming up where he will pass on the torch to a young protégé. But what will happen to Cap and Tony?

Cap came back from an alternate timeline as an Oldman. He gave his Shield to Sam and made him the new Cap. But Joe Russo told something to EW.com which does hint at a future Captain America movie that could explain everything that’s a mystery for people. He said:

“If Cap were to go back into the past and live there, he would create a branched reality. The question then becomes, how is he back in this reality to give the shield away? Interesting question, right? Maybe there’s a story there. There’s a lot of layers built into this movie and we spent three years thinking through it, so it’s fun to talk about it and hopefully fill in holes for people so they understand what we’re thinking. Especially when he says goodbye, he says, ‘I’ll miss you.’ Clearly, he knows something. Sam doesn’t know something.”

But now he has more or less confirmed that Chris Evans won’t be back at all. We just have to assume that he safely returned the stones and Mjolnir to their respective places and lived a happy life with Peggy Carter. In the recent ‘Happy Sad Confused’ Podcast, Joe & Anthony Russo answered:

“Joe – No, I think Chris — Chris is a very emotional person. I think, maybe it’s evident if you follow him on Twitter — because he does put his heart into what he says — but I feel like he has to close the door on things and emotionally move onto the next thing.

Anthony – There are no plans.

Joe – I think for now he’s emotionally moved on, yes.”

Evans did big his farewell back when he was done with his part after the reshoots. His contract with Marvel is up and he’s decided to move on from the MCU. He is looking forward to a life and career outside of Marvel. He has said it time and time again that he wants to direct films now, so that is probably what he will do. Even though there might not be a live action return of Evans, he could still voice Captain America in the upcoming Disney+ animated series, “What if?” Let’s see what happens.

As far as Downey’s return is concerned, the answer is much easier. Tony Stark is dead and Downey is looking to move on. He already has a packed schedule for the next 3-4 years with numerous non-MCU movie coming out. We thought that he could return as an AI as it was suggested by the Hologram in the end. But in my opinion that would have been an undermining of the character. Now we’ve also got the verdict of the directors!

During Comicbook.com’s live Q&A called “An Evening with Joe Russo,” the co-director said:

“Tony’s dead, you know? That’s it for Robert. He’s done.”

So for those who were hoping to see him return should just move on, as he is doing the same as well. Go watch Avengers: Endgame again if you wanna see him again!
