Captain Marvel has achieved greatness in the first 3 days of its release. It has brought in $455 Million worldwide already and with that being said, it literally is one of the biggest successful entries for a Superhero film. In fact, it has had the 6th biggest worldwide opening of all time. Disney would have been happy with the film making $100 Million on its domestic opening weekend, but Captain Marvel made $153 Million. So Captain Marvel is definitely becoming the next face of the MCU along with Black Panther, and we will surely see a Captain Marvel sequel soon enough.
But the big question that we have here is that could Captain Marvel 2 similar to its predecessor be another MCU prequel. Captain Marvel was set in 1995 and it was based upon the events of 1989 as well, but there’s a 2-decade gap in between this movie and Captain Marvel’s next MCU outing, i.e. Avengers: Endgame. Captain Marvel left a lot of things unexplained to be developed in the future, but we have to know whether this future will be after Endgame or before that.
Logically, we should get Captain Marvel 2 to be set before Endgame because then it can actually explain everything that needs to be told properly. Amongst those unexplained things is the set up for a Secret Invasion Storyline, the development of Hala, the fate of Yon Rogg, how Ronan becomes a villain in Guardians of the Galaxy, how Captain Marvel gets a new suit in Avengers: Endgame, what happens to Goose the Cat, and many more things.
The Captain Marvel post-credits scene was directly connected to Endgame as we see Captain Marvel show up in that scene. We see Carol wearing a new suit here, and her hair is different, so all that is a clear indication of the fact that Captain Marvel has had a few more adventures after her origin. We would certainly want to know more about those adventures, but there is a possibility that we may just be told about that in Endgame, and not be shown all that.
Perhaps we do get part of an answer in Avengers: Endgame as the description of new footage shown at Disney’s shareholder meeting has leaked, and it has Captain Marvel in it. Since Captain Marvel is with the Avengers, and Captain America still had his beard, we know that the post-credits scene took place at the start of the film.
To tie in the description of Avengers: Endgame footage with this, the Avengers including Nebula and Captain Marvel are talking about a plan to attack Thanos, and amidst the conversation Cap asks “what makes you think that we won’t lose this time?” and Carol replies, “This time you would have me.” Rhodey asks her “why didn’t you show up earlier?” and Carol replies “The other planets didn’t have the Avengers to help them like Earth.”
So according to this, Captain Marvel is probably a galactic hero who has been helping other planets. Logically, she has been helping the Skrulls since we see her leave with them. But 20 years could change everything in a person’s life, even if that person is the strongest Superhero of the Universe. Kevin Feige’s recent interviews teased the fact that Captain Marvel 2 will probably set a Secret Invasion storyline. Here’s what he said:
“Just like not all humans are bad, and not all humans are good, I think Skrulls probably have a variety of moralities amongst them. When they can do what they can do, it probably gets very tempting. So, it’s fun to have introduced this concept and see where it goes.
As we saw in the tag, she’s [Captain Marvel] with us now in the present day. But those intervening years between her soaring off with Talos and answering Fury’s call, we think is ripe with potential for storytelling.”
So there is a lot of build up to be done upon this. We could get a Captain Marvel sequel prior to Endgame, or even Iron Man for that matter as that would help us see the development of the Skrulls, and perhaps even the Kree. The ending of Captain Marvel left us upon a note where Captain Marvel has to interact with the Kree again.
She sent a message with Yon Rogg that she is coming to Hala to end all of their lies and their regime over other planets. So we cannot have Captain Marvel return to Hala after 20+ users if the Captain Marvel sequel is set up post-Avengers: Endgame. It just would not be a logical move.
We needed more development of the Kree as well, and that could surely happen if Captain Marvel 2 sends Carol to Hala not long after the events of her first film. We have to know how Ronan the Accuser goes Rogue and becomes this Kree Fanatic in Guardians of the Galaxy, so that could only be answered properly in a sequel. What’s interesting is that Captain Marvel 2 need not include Earth at all. It could easily be a big cosmic adventure. But something that Kevin Feige recently said could lead Carol back to Earth before Avengers: Endgame. He said:
“Well, I’d say two things. One, she does say it’s gotta be a real emergency, right? Yeah. The other thing I’d say is how do you know he never hit it? How do we know he never pushed it before? We’ve never seen him push it before. That doesn’t mean he never did.”
So what if Nick Fury had pushed the button off the screen. If something hasn’t been shown on screen doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened. The Chittauri attack on New York, or Ultron turning Sokovia into a meteor were big enough emergencies and Fury still opted not to call Captain Marvel.
What if he did call her before Iron Man, and that wasn’t that big of an emergency, and a dispute might have happened between Fury and Carol. That would be a good reason for Fury to avoid calling Captain Marvel in the direst situations. The Captain Marvel prelude teased that Fury and Carol did have a rift and that’s why Carol was always Plan C, but Captain Marvel clearly showed otherwise.
So there is a lot of history to be explored here and only a sequel set before Endgame could explain that properly. So let’s see what Marvel has in store for us. If it turns out to be another prequel then there is the disadvantage of the Stakes not being very high. But since the first film left a lot of stones unturned, we’d probably like another movie to turn them.
What do you guys think?
