While the world currently focuses upon Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, Marvel is slowly building up their arsenal for the next films in line, which are the solo Black Widow movie and The Eternals. Little is known about both the films for now, but the one that we know for sure is the fact that both these films are definite MCU prequels. Black Widow will take place before Iron Man, and The Eternals will be a story told millions of years in the past of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Production on both these films will begin later in the year as Black Widow has been reported to begin shooting in June, and as Production Weekly confirmed it in the past, The Eternals will begin its production of August 1 in Atlanta.
Back in November 2018, the character breakdowns of The Eternals were revealed by That Hashtag Show, and 12 characters were listed in that including Karen, Druig, Piper, Elysius, Forgotten One, Ikaris, Makkari, Sersi, Starfox, Thena, Zuras, and an unnamed “Greek God” character.
While people who are aware with the rich comics lore of Marvel are aware of most of these characters, but there’s a mystery character among these who has probably been revealed now. That mystery character is the first name that we read in the list, i.e. Karen and according to MCU Cosmic, Karen could be a version of Margo Damian, who first appeared in Jack Kirby’s original series from the ’70s.
In the comics, Margo works as an archaeologist along with her father Damian, and the two discover the existence of Eternals on Earth due to the help of Ikaris who was in a guise posing himself as their friend Ike. Well, Marvel Studios will seemingly take close inspirations from the comics, but we can obviously expect them to play around with this a little bit.
Well, we have to take this rumor as a grain of salt since this revelation also comes from a source that assured everyone that the title of Avengers 4 is Avengers: Annihilation. So there’s a big dent upon their credibility there, but they were the ones who also revealed the fact that The Eternals is in works, so at least they got something right.
The Cast for The Eternals movie would probably be announced soon (probably in the next 2-3 months) and it will be interesting to see who Marvel adds to their huge family. It is highly likely that Marvel has already cast people and is just waiting to make the announcements to avoid shifting focus from the likes of Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. Or perhaps they may just have actors and names in their minds, but haven’t yet finalized the talks. Who knows what’s going on behind the scenes?
The good thing is that the film will begin production in August so there’s plenty of time left for it to complete as Marvel has locked in a supposed release date for November 6, 2020. So, that’s plenty of time for the production and post productions stages to do their thing. The film will follow the script of Matthew and Ryan Firpo under the Direction of The Rider’s breakout director Chloe Zhao.
The first synopsis of the film that has been circulating around the internet will tell you what to expect from the project:
“The story of ‘THE ETERNALS’ is set millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered individuals as well as more villainous off-shoots known as Deviants. The two groups went on to battle each other throughout history to see which would eventually become the ultimate race. The story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.”
Marvel is clearly looking to expand their cosmic boundaries, and they can easily do that with the Eternals, who will set the course for many more projects to come in and portray their unique stories.
