Every Way The Avengers: Endgame Trailer Referenced Previous MCU Films

The Avengers: Endgame Trailer teased quite a lot of new stuff from the plot of the upcoming film, but you would be surprised to know that there were a few moments that actually referenced the previous moments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hints for the story of the film are fine but what really brings all the nostalgia back are the way in which these films relate or remake the old moments we’ve been familiarized with. So here are every one of those references.

The one with Iron Man

The Avengers: Endgame trailer began with the whole montage of Tony being adrift in space. He’s ran out of resources, having only a day’s Oxygen left for survival. So, we see Tony recording a message for Pepper if she were to ever find it somehow. Right through this montage, Tony himself gives us the hint that he will be saved by the Rescue Armor that Pepper is supposed to wear in the film.

What we don’t really notice here is the top that Tony’s wearing. Not only is it different from what we saw him wearing in the previous film, but it actually portrays the journey that Tony has had since Iron Man one.

He wore a similar west while he built his suit in a cave back in Iron Man 1, and now that moment gets referenced in the final movie that Tony Stark is going to star in. As we move into the Endgame, we see Tony being at the end of the line.

The one with The Winter Soldier

The trailer had many fans surprised and excited due to the fact that it brought back Captain America’s best suit into play. We saw Captain America get as much screen time as Tony got in the trailer. So it is more or less confirmed that he has a much bigger role in the film as well. While we have seen Captain America wear his Avengers suit in the set photos, this trailer brought in the stealth suit we saw him sporting in the Winter Soldier.

Not only is it there to directly reference the previous film, but there is probably a deeper meaning to the usage of this particular suit. You may be asking that why would Steve be wearing the Winter Soldier suit here? We haven’t seen this suit in any of the leaked promo arts or the set photos except for the 10-year anniversary magazine.

The reason for this is that the Avengers will be taking good care that they cause minimal damage when they use time travel to alter certain aspects of the past. Just the way Tony was hiding his identity going back in time, it seems that Steve is also going to do the same thing when he goes back in time to the events of The Winter Soldier.

The problem of having different hair than he did in 2014 could easily be solved by the Cowl/Helmet that Captain America wears. So, the Winter Soldier Stealth suit comes in as a way to replace the old Captain America somehow without anyone knowing. This is another subtle hint at Time Travel.

The one with The First Avenger

The biggest reference that flashed in front of our screens was the iconic compass of Captain America with a cut out of Peggy’s image in it. We saw this back in Captain America: The First Avenger where the camera shooting the plans of Team Cap during World War II suddenly took got a glimpse of Cap’s former flame Peggy.

It seems that Captain America still has that compass and has saved it as a memento of his old times with Agent Carter. There’s another reason why this compass suddenly shows up here, as it could be totally setting up the vision that Scarlet Witch showed Captain America during the Age of Ultron. Captain America could be dying and finally getting his dance with Peggy at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

That’s about it from the trailer, but we are pretty sure that with Time Travel, the film wouldn’t just reference the previous films, but it would take us directly in them. It’s great to see how Infinity War also did the same thing by bringing in so many lines from the previous MCU movies. Loki saying “we have a Hulk,” Bruce saying “fine, I’ll do it myself” are only a few examples.

Avengers: Endgame comes out on April 26.
