Disney Plans to Buy Spider-Man Back:
Spider-Man is a commodity that Marvel has had its eyes on ever since they had to sell him to Sony. Back in the day, Sony came to buy Spider-Man and offered $10 Million for him. Marvel made them a counter off to sell all of their characters for $25 Million, and Sony rejected that as they were only interested in Spider-Man. Well, what a stupid deal that was. Since then, Kevin Feige has tried very hard to get the Marvel house back together. And, he has been the reason for Sony & Disney to be working on the same page.
As we all know, there was a lot of drama between Sony & Disney after Spider-Man: Far From Home made $1.13 Billion. Disney wanted in on the ownership of Spider-Man films and Sony denied. They didn’t respond to Disney’s offer of having a 25% stake in Spider-Man movies for 6 months. Later, Disney jumped there offer up to 50% and Sony took Spider-Man back home.
Now because of Tom Holland, Disney & Sony have got back on the same page for at least 3 more films (a solo Spider-Man film, Spider-Man with Venom & Spider-Man in Avengers). But we can suspect that the chapter of Spider-Man rights reverting back to Disney isn’t over yet. The new deal between Sony & Disney has merely delayed the inevitable.
Either Sony will be bought by someone bigger like Apple, Amazon or even Netflix. We all know that all three of these are trying to make it big in the Streaming Service game, and getting Sony would allow them to get more assets to show on their streaming services. If that happens, then according to Sony & Marvel’s initial deal, Spider-Man and all characters that are related to him will automatically revert back to Marvel/Disney.
But there were reports that Sony actually wanted $10 Billion for Spider-Man. They really did value him so high. Disney would never make a buy this big for a character because they’ve already got so many bankable characters that have been making more money than Spider-Man. Furthermore, they bought the entire Marvel Studios for $4 Billion. So, how do you imagine that they’d spend $10 Billion for Spider-Man? It just won’t make sense.
Now, another tid-bit has come in from Hollywood Scooper Mikey Sutton. If you don’t know who Mikey Sutton is, then just remember that he was the one to first break out the news about Spider-Man joining the MCU in Civil War. Here’s what he has to say:
“Disney wants to buy Spider-Man. While rumors had circulated before the Sony-Disney dispute of such a purchase, it was mere speculation, especially the erroneous high number that was quoted. Disney is looking to offer in the range of $4bn to $5bn for Spider-Man. But now the questions will be asked. He’s Marvel’s most well-known hero, and with Iron Man and Captain America gone, they need an anchor in the MCU.”
Spider-Man is someone who could continue in the MCU forever & ever. Moreover, the characters related to him are pure gold. Venom has become a major selling property, Morbius could be used extremely well since Marvel has a Blade movie in works and most importantly, Norman Osborn could really go on to be a major figure offering connections to Dark Avengers as well. Then there are the properties that could connect with Spider-Man himself. Deadpool, Wolverine & Spider-Man crossover would be a dream come true. Spider-Man could gel well with other New York heroes like the Defenders.
So, if this new rumor is true then Disney should make the Spider-Man purchase, and Sony should sell him because if their entire company sells, then they won’t get anything for Spider-Man at all. Let’s see what happens. As far as the near future of Spider-Man is concerned, he could be making a cameo in Venom 2, he has got his own solo Spider-Man 3 coming out on July 16, 2021 & then there will be another MCU appearance that Spider-Man is locked for.
