Ever since we’ve got to know that the Skrulls will be the villains in the upcoming Captain Marvel, people have not been able to drop the thought that what if a well-established MCU character is actually a shapeshifting green alien planted by the race of the Skrulls to infiltrate the entire planet. That has led us to suspect every character, from the least to the most amount of importance they have. While we know that the Secret Invasion plot will not be brought in until Phase 4, it is surely being set up and some side character might as well turn out to be a Skrull agent. A new theory actually suggests that Pepper Potts has been a Skrull since Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Pepper has been a big character especially in the Iron Man franchise, while she has had 3 more appearances in the first Avengers film, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War. She has been the heart of Tony and his character has been driven & motivated by her. She has been a great support to him in the solo movies, but she only had cameos in the other three MCU movies.
Well, her story has had some ups and downs in the MCU, and that is what has spawned a fan theory given by Redditor CharlieSNPP who suggests that Pepper actually became a Skrull since Homecoming. Here’s what he had to say upon this matter:
“So we know Pepper was worried about Tony’s PTSD and spending all his time making Suits after the Avengers, to the point where [they] broke up before Civil [War], and then got together six months later in *Homecoming.
The theory goes that Tony went a little nuts after Avengers, leading to him and Pepper arguing and then Tony blowing up all his Suits in Iron Man 3. From there, he makes only one more suit, however, he also constructs the Iron Legion – a fleet of AI controlled Iron Man-esq robots to try and police the World from Alien threats without being in danger.
After helping create Ultron Tony feels guilt for all those killed and begins upgrading his suit eventually into Nanotech which we see in Infinity War. This new tinkering with his suit again, and Pepper finally realising that Tony wont or can’t change due to how terrified she is, leaves him before Civil War. Pepper is then abducted, duplicated and replaced with a Skrull to gather intelligence about the Avengers.
That’s my theory, it explains why the couple seemingly broke up then nearly engaged in six months and adding emotional weight for Tony for Phase 4.”
Well, it is a plausible theory, but we know for a fact that Tony is not some stupid individual who would not understand the difference in the way that Pepper feels. He is a very experienced human and would totally understand if there is even a teeny tiny bit of difference in Pepper’s behaviour. They were just taking a break from each other, and having taken that space, they came back even stronger finally getting engaged.
Just imagine if Pepper turned out to be a Skrull. Tony would have been sleeping with a green shape-shifting alien all this time. That may actually be the reason for Tony not being able to get Pepper pregnant! Oh Tony, when will you learn. You should stick to making suits.
Pepper is slated to return in Avengers 4 and it has been rumoured that she will be having Tony’s baby, so perhaps she is not a Skrull after all. The only person who will be at a high risk of being a Skrull would be Nick Fury. He will have gone up against them in the 90s during the events of Captain Marvel, so it would be extremely shocking for him to turn out to be an alien in disguise. We will only find out about this when Avengers 4 comes out on May 3, 2019.
Here’s the official Synopsis of Avengers 4:
“A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.”
