The entire MCU before Infinity War spanning 18 movies led us to the epic showdown between Mad Titan Thanos and Avengers Assemble. It all began with Iron Man in 2008 and since then we never looked back. Finally, the 19th MCU film ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ with the grandiose ensemble cast (with over 60 comic-book characters of relevance) came on the big screen and blew our minds. The movie has earned over $2 Billion at the box office worldwide.
It was the ultimate comic-book fest and a thriller of the highest order. The biggest draw of the movie was its villain ‘Thanos’ who first came in the post-credits scenes of ‘The Avengers’ followed by Avengers: Age of Ultron. He was hyped by Marvel studios beyond measure. Here’s what the Russos said:
“With “Infinity War,” the biggest new element to the movie is Thanos and the fact that he’s entering the storytelling in a very bold, strong way, to the degree that he’s almost one of the leads. We’ve shaped an interesting narrative around him that in some ways leans heavily on a heist film in the fact that he’s going after the infinity stones in a much bolder, successful way than he has in the past. The entire movie has that energy of the bad guy being one step ahead of the heroes. We looked at a lot of movies that had that heist-style energy to them, and that brought some inspiration.”
“This is it. Thanos is an unstoppable villain he’s virtually invincible, he’s highly intelligent – genius level intelligent – he’s like the Genghis Khan of the universe, and to stop him it’s going to cost them a lot. They’re going to have to see if they’re willing to pay that price, and that’s what these movies are really about”.
Thanos was the most dreadful cosmic villain that Avengers had faced and he overpowered the combined force of Avengers and Guardians, collected all six Infinity stones, assembled them in a gauntlet and snapped his fingers, unleashing a global catastrophe of epic proportions.
One of the most distinctive attributes of a great villain is that certain proportion of even good guys agree with his ideology or philosophy. For instance, Joker is an iconic villain as some people actually believe that he makes sense. Similarly, Thanos maybe the terrifying monster, but his goal has noble intent. He believes that the resources are scarce, and the over-population on planets will render it unsustainable.
There are striking similarities between Thanos and Iron Man, in fact, one fan described both of them to be mirror images of one another. Stark is willing to go to extreme lengths to achieve his ends, whether it means creating an AI who turned evil supervillain to defend Earth or imprisoning friends in violation of Sokovia accords.
On the other hand, Thanos is fundamentally evil and is willing to exterminate half the life in the entire universe, only to fulfil his grand purpose in life i.e rebalancing the universe. In the Infinity War, even Thanos admired Stark’s courage and determination to fight for his people. He said to him “I hope they remember you”, and the next thing we know is that Stark suffered a serious blow.
We will have Round 2 of Iron Man and Thanos in Avengers 4. The details of the movie have been as usual kept under wraps but plot synopsis has been released online. It reads:
“A culmination of 22 interconnected films, the fourth instalment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.”
The official movie synopsis of Avengers Infinity War reads:
“Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment”.
