Avengers Infinity War released worldwide a few days ago and it has totally nailed every aspect of the movie be it direction, visual effects, story or casting. Everything is in total sync with each other. It has already broken box-office records as it opened to a massive opening weekend of $260 million worldwide and is poised to cross $1 Billion in a matter of a week. In fact, Box office pundits argue that the movie has enough juice to breach $2 Billion if the hype continues and more people go and watch the movie.
It is the biggest comic-book event that Marvel fans have been waiting for a decade to come to big screens. This is the 19th MCU movie and all the previous Marvel movies had set up the epic showdown between Thanos and Avengers assemble.
The Mad Titan ‘Thanos’ only had one goal i.e to bring balance to the universe. He believes only he has the strong will to take the hardest decisions for the galaxy. He wants to assemble the Infinity gauntlet with all six Infinity stones representing cosmic singularities embedded in it, which will allow him to destroy half the life in the universe at the snap of his fingers.
It was quite evident from the very beginning of the movie that Strange will protect the Time Stone at any cost. When Tony Stark and Strange learn about the coming threat of Thanos and how he wants the six Infinity Stones, Tony proposes to lock the Time Stone away safely in a secret place where Thanos will never find it. Strange disagrees.
He even goes on to claim that he will protect the Time Stone at all costs, even if it means sacrificing both Peter and Tony to do so. And yet he gave up the time stone willingly when Thanos was just inches away from killing Iron Man. Why did he do that? Want to know the answer??
Here’s why [SPOILER] needs to be alive to defeat Thanos in Avengers 4!!! The [SPOILER] in this case being Tony Stark.
Spoiler Alert: MAJOR Spoilers for Infinity War up ahead. Proceed with caution….
Strange traveled to 14,000,605 different future scenarios where the Avengers go toe to toe with the mad Titan. Interestingly, out of all those scenarios, they win in only one. Strange knows even more about the future of the MCU than what we saw on screen. Since he has glanced into the future, he knows a lot about what is going to happen in Avengers 4.
And this is where Tony Stark comes in. What if Thanos did not just have to defeat the Avengers but he had to defeat the Avengers in a specific way? They did get defeated in the rest 14,000,604 scenarios too. But why did Strange say “There was no other way”, before fading into eternity? It looks like Tony Stark is integral to defeating Thanos. And it’s truly fitting to have him at front and center of the over-arching plot of Avengers 4.
The Avengers need Tony Stark
The rest of the heroes of the MCU are reactionary in nature. They see a threat and they react. Tony Stark is different. He has the gift of foresight. When the attack on Manhattan happened in Avengers (2012), Tony was the only one to guess it correctly that another invasion will soon follow.
He had been tirelessly preparing the Earth for such a scenario. He created Ultron with the intention of using it as a global defense A.I. He pushed for the Sokovia Accords to keep the superhumans in check. When Thanos came, Tony knew he was right. Tony is a futurist, the only one in the entire team of Avengers.
He is a genius and now he knows Time Travel is possible…go figure!!
Tony Stark has a knack for learning new disciplines overnight. He learned Thermonuclear Astrophysics in a day, something scientists take years and years to master.
While Shuri is indeed the smartest of the MCU, Tony learns things the fastest and that’s what makes him unique. He has observed the Time Stone in action and now knows Time Travel and the Multi-Verse Theory is real.
In Avengers 4 (which is widely considered a time travel movie), the Avengers are wearing strange timepieces on their bodies. Maybe this is how Tony makes Time Travel possible i.e through technology. He wants to undo everything Thanos has ever done.
Tony will learn Magic in Avengers 4
In the comics too, Tony Stark has been teased to become a master of the mystic arts, the latest being Generation: Iron Man and Iron Heart One-Shot which saw a 126-year-old Tony Stark who has become that timeline’s Sorcerer Supreme.
The MCU has used scientific know-how (by consulting several theoretical and quantum physicists) to create a foundation for the Eldritch magic that Strange uses in the MCU.
In Avengers 4, Tony will use the scientific foundations of the mystic arts and start learning the fundamentals of magic to use against Thanos. He won’t be a sorcerer; he will know how things work.
Tony will sacrifice himself
Strange knew he would die soon when he gave up the Time Stone to Thanos. He gave Tony a second lease at life. Tony has always been a selfish but at times selfless hero. He has put himself in harm’s way more times than we could count. Tony’s arc in the MCU has always been characters questioning his actions and his role.
Is he really just a self-absorbed prick or could he also be a force for good? Avengers 4 is sort of a final showdown for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The current iteration of the MCU began with Iron Man and it will be epic if it ends with his death. The irony is at its finest right now – Strange sacrificed himself and half the universe to allow Tony to live, only for Tony to sacrifice himself later to save the universe.
