Voldemort is undoubtedly one of the most iconic villains in the history of literature. He is feared by most and has a past that is so interesting that it makes him fascinating. Voldemort is power hungry but that is not the only thing he is. He craves greatness and immortality and has achieved so much in the field of magic that he can give any great wizard a run for their money. There are many things that Voldemort is capable of doing that other wizards are not and it makes him stand apart.
Voldemort, the Actor:
One of the qualities that Voldemort had was his acting ability. He was so convincing that he could make people do stuff for him and he used this ability on many people. He was also good at being charming and charmed his way out of many situations and that is how he stole Hufflepuff’s cup from an old lady named Hepzibah Smith.
Voldemort excelled at legilimency which is a technique that lets you see through people and read their minds and thoughts. This is how he kept a check on his followers and also used this ability to drive his enemies mad by manipulating them. The opposite of legilimency is Occlumency which helps a person to shield their minds.
One of the abilities that Voldemort has is speaking Parseltongue. Parseltongue is the language of snakes which is not known by many humans. Salazar Slytherin could speak to snakes and so can Tom Riddle who is the heir of Slytherin. Harry only go the ability because he was unintentionally made a Horcrux by Voldemort.
Non-verbal spells are hard to master and not everyone can perform them and wandless magic is even more difficult. Voldemort was extremely talented and mastered the art of wandless magic. He was a brilliant student and quick learner since childhood and his excellence at magic is visible throughout his life.
The unforgivable curses are obviously illegal and unethical to perform but Voldemort doesn’t care about the law. To perform these curses one needs real conviction and intention otherwise they don’t work. Voldemort uses the curses frequently and they always work for him.
He invented spells:
Many great wizards have invented their own spells and Voldemort is one of them. He invented spells that he and his army of followers could communicate through. He invented the dark mark to induce fear and to communicate with other death eaters. He also invented the spell ‘Morsmordre’ that conjures the mark.
Another field of magic that Voldemort excels at is transfiguration and he can transform things and beings into other things. When Harry and Hermione visited Godric’s hollow they were attacked by Nagini who was in the form of Bathilda Bagshot. Voldemort had transformed her into the form of the historian.
A brilliant mind:
Voldemort was an excellent student when he was at Hogwarts and was liked by all his teachers. He was good at learning and had a very sharp mind. Something that made him an even better wizard was his curiosity that helped him learn more about different fields of magic.
His dueling skills:
As we have seen multiple times in the series and especially in order of the phoenix when he duels Dumbledore it is evident that Dark Lord had amazing dueling skills. His knowledge of a wide range of spells and curses make him an even bigger threat and hard to defeat in a duel.
Something that sets Voldemort apart from other wizards is that he could fly. He had trained himself and some of his followers to fly without any support with the use of magic. If you are wondering how he could do that then JK Rowling answered that for us:
“Yes, nearly all wizards use wands, which makes magic easier to channel. Wandless magic is sophisticated and takes more talent.”
