10 Most Disappointing Movie Reboots Since 2000

Hollywood has been greenlighting various reboots for that have already been made previously. Sometimes these movie reboots do amazingly well, consider the case of the Dark Knight Trilogy and even Jumanji. But most of the times, these reboots tend to be unsuccessful or earn mixed reviews. Here is a list of the most disappointing movie reboots since 2000.

Robocop

The original Robocop was an action satire which was very well appreciated when it came out. The movie gave rise to two more sequels which were not as good as the first one and the franchise stopped there. Still, the reason why the original did so well was the R-rating that it got. The reboot that came out in 2013 took that element out and even though it had the new suit and everything, it was doomed to fail.

Fantastic Four

The original 2 Fantastic Four movies were not very huge successes but still, they did please quite a bit of fans even though they upset them with the second one by turning Galactus into a huge cloud. But, what came after that was the king of everything. Josh Trank’s reboot just nailed it at sucking! The movie was a huge disaster as they managed to screw everything we know about Fantastic Four and it Doctor Doom in a big way.

Terminator

The original two Terminator movies really set the bar high, as James Cameron really gave us something to cheer for with the first two movies. Terminator 3 was a bit of disappointment and Terminator salvation should not even be counted in this list. One of the worst reboots was actually Terminator: Genisys when Alan Taylor tried to begin a new trilogy with an old Arnold, and a really bad script.

Superman Returns

The original Superman Quadrology ended in the 80s. Bryan Singer tried to bring Superman into our lives with his reboot sequel Superman Returns. Unfortunately, he failed to create the same magic which he created with the X-Men and the movie failed big time! Brandon Routh was just not the Superman we needed.

Godzilla (2014)

In 2014, the world’s largest monster was revived. Even though the movie was way better than the original that came out in 1998, it was still a bit boring as fans had to go through a story which they did not care a lot about and Godzilla did not show up on the big screen for a fair bit of time. Still, Gareth Edwards did not fully fail with this movie.

The Mummy

Usually, a Tom Cruise movie does not go as bad as The Mummy reboot went. Even though it did manage to make a good sum at the box office, it still lacked the fun and the heart that the original trilogy had. Even Tom Cruise’s running shot could not save the movie from getting harsh reviews from the audiences as well as the critics. It also missed the thrill and the fear that a mummy movie should have.

Planet of the Apes (2001)

Fox knew exactly what they needed to do with the Planet of the Apes reboot.

“What if our main guy finds himself in Ape Land and the apes are trying to play a game like baseball but they’re missing one element, like the pitcher or something. And when our guy comes along, he knows what they’re missing and he shows them and they all start playing.”

Well, this scene did not make it to the final cut of Tim Burton’s 2001 reboot, which was so needless and stupid that nobody involved has ever said anything good about it.

Evil Dead (2013)

2013 brought us yet another uncanny reboot which the fans literally hated. The horror the original had was turned into graphic violence and it completely lacked the thrill and the suspense that should remain constant in a horror movie.

Total Recall

The original Total Recall in 1990 starring Schwarzenegger was the R-Rated movie of the summer. It was completely packed with more blood, gunfights and mind-bending ideas than any of its competitors. The reboot starring Colin Farrell was totally the opposite as it had a PG 13 rating, not enough fights and nothing to really make fans feel amazed by the movie.

Spider-Man

Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy is one of the best Superhero movie trilogies even though the third one was a mess. Trying to get rid of that, Sony tried to get in a new Spider-Man franchise in order to set up a ‘Spider-man universe’ with The Amazing Spider-Man. The reboot was pretty disappointing and it was followed by an even worse sequel which did not manage to get anything right even after casting a great Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield.
