Stan Lee May Have Confirmed The Most Awaited Solo Movie

The Marvel fans may sound like they have got everything they desired but still, there is this feeling of being neglected. It has been a long-standing demand of fans to have a Black Widow solo movie as the character is hugely popular and deserve a shot.

Marvel Cinematic Universe is full of amazing heroes, but there is one character that fans have adored throughout in the MCU, Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow right when she first appeared in Iron Man 2. Black Widow is one of the most epic action stars of the MCU and is a kick-ass assassin and a great spy. We all love the character just because Scarlett Johansson has done such a remarkable job with the character.

So many times fans have raised their hopes in anticipation of an announcement from the Marvel studios but it never happened. The God of Marvel comics, Stan Lee recently attended Supernova Comic-Con in Brisbane, Australia and he was asked about the possibility of a standalone Black Widow movie.

He said ‘funny you should ask that’. He assured the fans that one day there will be a Black Widow movie. We should remember that Stan made a similar comment about T’Challa when there was no chance of securing a Black Panther movie.

This is not an official confirmation from Marvel but if someone like Stan Lee is throwing his weight behind the idea of a solo Black Widow movie, it will force studio executives to reconsider. It is confirmed that Scarlett Johansson aka Black Widow will appear in Avengers Infinity War and Avengers 4.

Taika Waititi revealed that if he were given a chance to direct a movie, he would like to do Black Widow comedy flick. Here’s what he said:

“In all honesty, I reckon I could probably bring something pretty unique to any of the franchises. So, I’d love to see Black Widow. I’d like to see Black Widow as something crazy and a bit funnier than we expect it to be. Because we know her story and it’s very sullen and very dark and her history is very dark. But! What’s the funny version of that? What’s the more entertaining version of that?”

There are two ways to look at these comments – Firstly, the idea of Black Widow solo movie is old and will get Marvel fans hugely excited. Secondly, the idea of a comedy seems out of place with Black Widow in it, one would imagine a Bourne Ultimatum kinda movie for her.

But Taika is this master film-maker who got elements of comedy work extremely well in Ragnarok as well. He doubled down on his previous comments and said:

“I really go for the underdog. And I think there’s a way in with any of the characters. You just have to find it and find what honors what’s already there with the source material but also brings it into a more entertaining form for the audience.”

In the DCEU, we saw the movie based on the Amazonian goddess Wonder Woman, it was smashing hit and has now launched an Oscar campaign. This put pressure on MCU to do a female superhero movie and they announced Captain Marvel instead of Black Widow who has been part of “The Avengers” from day one.

In fact, the poll done by an entertainment agency Fandango at the behest of USA Today revealed that Marvel fans overwhelmingly are in favor of an independent Black widow solo movie (48%), followed by Vision (15%), Falcon (12%), Hawkeye (10%), War Machine (8%) and Scarlett witch (7%).

Moreover, Scarlett Johansson who played the character is totally game to work on a solo movie based on Black Widow. She earlier said this in an interview with Michigan Avenue:

“I really like playing Natasha, playing the Black Widow in The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War. It’s been an interesting journey, to take a character and grow it over these years, and peel the layers back and be able to, as you do in life, grow with this person. It’s a character that’s really enigmatic and has an amazing origins story, so there’s a lot for me to play off of.”

She added that fans love her character as it’s “part of the fun of the Marvel franchise,” they discover “little references that they knew from the comics and stuff” when they piece all these movies together.

Recently, Scarlett Johansson was again asked about possible Black Widow movie and she is open to doing it if it’s done in a right way. She said:

“I don’t know if I have the capacity for it. I think the fans were adamant about it, it could be done. It should be done, probably. It’d have to be done the right way, though. It’d really have to be its own standalone and its own style and its own story. But there’s a lot of great stuff that you could do with it. It could just be awesome.”

But till now the closest we have come to a Black Widow solo movie is an assurance by Kevin Feige that “We (Marvel) is committed to a Black Widow film”. He said that the movie will happen someday but no official plans have been made.

The actor Chris Evans a.k.a Captain America has come out openly in support of a movie based on Black Widow and believes it could be a great addition to the roster of movies. According to him, she has played a critical role in different Marvel films and deserves her own movie.

It will be really shocking if still, it doesn’t happen given the popularity of the character and a big missed opportunity for Marvel. In the meantime, Black Widow fans have something to look forward to.

There is now a possibility of an all-female MCU team-up movie in the next phase. This is not something new as there was a major pitch for an all-female Marvel superhero film by the leading Marvel ladies namely Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Karen Gillian (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis) and even Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) was part of the group effort.

Tessa Thompson explained that a particular scene in Avengers Infinity War grew to become an idea where female superheroes can be clubbed together in a movie. Here’s what she said in an interview with CBR:

“I think in that group was Brie Larson, myself, Zoe Saldana, although she ran off to the bathroom, I think, so she came midway through the pitch but she had been in the rev-up to it. Scarlett Johansson. Pom Klementieff and Karen Gillan, who are both in the Guardians movies. Yeah, I think it was that group. We were just sort of all in a semicircle talking, and it just came up, because none of us really worked together – well, I suppose Zoe, and Karen, and Pom – and wouldn’t it be nice if we could all work together?

“And we were sort of speculating on their ways in which it might happen in Infinity War, or might not happen,” she continued. “And we thought, ‘No, we should just have a whole movie where we know every day we’re going to arrive and get to work together.’ So we just ran right up to Kevin Feige and started talking about it.”

Thompson praised Kevin Feige for his open-mindedness and added:

“That’s the thing that’s so fantastic about Kevin is you always get general interest from him. At least when you start speaking, and then you might get 10 minutes in, and you sense that maybe something is not as exciting. But no, he’s really open to collaboration and wants to hear what we’re interested in.”

With the growing popularity and success of female-driven movies such as Wonder Woman, DCEU is planning for Batgirl solo movie as well, on the other hand, Marvel has a lot of catching up to do. Captain Marvel solo movie has been greenlit but Kevin Feige is taking one step at a time. Who knows Black Widow will be the next one.
