Which Infinity Stones Does Thanos Have In Avengers: Infinity War Trailer?

Avengers: Infinity War trailer came and conquered the internet. The trailer was epic, breathtaking, an action-packed extravaganza that has the potential to become the highest-grossing movie ever given the massive positive reception it has received in the first 24 hours of release from Marvel fan community and superhero film lovers in general.

Although, the Infinity war cast is stacked up with heavy-weights but the most important comic-book character is Thanos. Till now, he has been teased in Marvel movies in post-credits of Phase 2, 3 films, but Infinity war will be the first major project where he is going to be the central antagonist pursuing his sinister ends.

In the trailer, we saw actor Josh Brolin playing super-villain Thanos and his transformation into the most powerful cosmic being in the galaxy is terrifying as hell. We saw first-hand the massive powers of Infinity gems, each of them individually are powerful but collectively they can rewrite reality and destroy worlds.

Once Josh Brolin said in an interview that he may not have all the Infinity stones in Avengers Infinity War. This triggered a speculation if the Thanos’ journey to collect all the gems would be stretched across two films. To address this issue, he said:

“I haven’t done the second movie so I don’t know. I literally don’t know what the second script is. I don’t know if they’ve finished the second script, and that’s the truth. I think they’re in the midst of structuring and restructuring.”

He also added that Thanos will also use psychological tactics as much as he would use brute force.\

But this doubt was resolved as Anthony Russo, the co-director of the movie described it as a heist movie where Thanos will spend time strategizing in order to steal all the Infinity stones.

In Avengers 4, he will launch an all-out assault against the entire world which will force Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy to join forces to prevent a global catastrophe. In an interview with CNET, Russo Brothers spoke about how they were inspired by heist movies for Avengers Infinity War. Here’s what they said:

avengers

“With “Infinity War,” the biggest new element to the movie is Thanos and the fact that he’s entering the storytelling in a very bold, strong way, to the degree that he’s almost one of the leads. We’ve shaped an interesting narrative around him that in some ways leans heavily on a heist film in the fact that he’s going after the infinity stones in a much bolder, successful way than he has in the past. The entire movie has that energy of the bad guy being one step ahead of the heroes. We looked at a lot of movies that had that heist-style energy to them, and that brought some inspiration”.

In the MCU, there are six infinity gems that Thanos needs to assemble an infinity gauntlet and control literally every aspect of cosmic existence. There are five Infinity stones that have been introduced but soul stone is yet to be discovered. Here’s what the Collector said:

“Before creation itself, there were six singularities. Then the universe exploded into existence, and the remnants of these systems were forged into concentrated ingots… Infinity Stones.”―The Collector

So which of the Infinity Stones he has managed to steal in the trailer?

The blue one is the Space Stone that was previously used to power Tesseract during the Chitauri invasion at the Battle of New York. It is the first Infinity stone which allows you to be omnipresent and warp yourself in any part of the universe. It helps in opening portals that can be used for interstellar teleportation. It is orange in color in comics (although it has been shown in blue in MCU). Nick Fury, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D said in ‘The Avengers’ –

“Howard Stark fished that out of the ocean when he was looking for you. He thought what we think; the Tesseract could be the key to unlimited sustainable energy. That’s something the world sorely needs.”

It’s possible that the post-credit scene of Thor: Ragnarok will be the first scene of Avengers Infinity War. Why is Thanos suddenly interested in Thor’s ship? Well, at the end of Thor: Ragnarok, when Loki went inside treasure room to bring Surtur alive, he looked at Tesseract and he grabbed it because he is God of mischief. The ship will probably be destroyed by Thanos and Loki will gladly hand over the Infinity stone to him.

The other stone is purple in color i.e Power Stone aka Orb which we saw in Guardians of the Galaxy. Ronan, the Collector was entrusted with the task of stealing it but Peter Quill’s dream hampered the plans and decided that it would be better protected by Nova Corps. The Mad Titan must have destroyed Nova Corps and retrieved the ‘Orb’ that allows user to have godlike abilities. It is red in comics.

Avengers: Infinity War

Two stones are down and four to go. Well, in the trailer, we saw Corvus Glaive (leader of Black Order) ripping “Mind stone” off Vision’s forehead. The Reality stone aka Aether was with the Collector after he was given the possession of it by Asgardians at the end of Thor: The Dark World. But the leaked footage showed Thanos ambushing Collector’s base and possibly retrieving the Infinity stone. The “Time stone” is lying in Kamar-Taj library and “Soul stone” is in Wakanda.

Avengers Infinity War will be released on May 4, 2018.
