Last year Warner Bros. launched their Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts And Where to Find Them directed by David Yates (who directed last four HP movies). The studio has started the production for the sequel and has also announced the cast and revealed some of the plot details. Eddie Redmayne will return as Newt Scamander with Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald and Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone and also Teena, Quinnie, and Jacob from the first part will unite with Newt and Albus Dumbledore for their fight against Grindelwald. The sequel will feature Jude Law as the young Dumbledore.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 will take the fans on another ride to Hogwarts, in a different timeline. The sequel will take off directly from where the first film ended. In this sequel, more characters which are ancestors of the characters from Harry Potter series, Zoe Kravitz will play Leta Lestrange, Callum Turner will play Theseus Scamander, William Nadylam will appear as Yusuf Kama, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson has been cast as Skender, Kevin Guthrie will play Abernathy.
The new set of photos have been put on official Instagram that features a sign promoting Newt Scamander’s book tour. The event will take place at Obscurus Books which remains a mysterious publisher operating since 1926. The photo dropped a hint that the first movie villain i.e Ezra Miller’s character Credence Barebone could find redemption in the sequel. Here’s the caption of the photo:
“A newly published author must have a book launch party. Newt Scamander has been busy. #MagicInProgress #FantasticBeasts #WizardingWednesdays”
The deleted scene of the first movie has Credence escaping New York and it’s possible that he becomes an ally to Newt Scamander in the upcoming sequel. Here’s the theory given by Redditor SatyrSaturn that will connect him with Newt:
“My theory is that Newt will save Credence from his Obscurus. Since Credence helped Mary Lou print all those flyers and pamphlets for the Second Salemers. I predict that he will go into publishing, and [then] publishes Newt’s book.”
The official statement released by Warner Bros. is as follows:
“J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the film, which opens in 1927, a few months after Newt helped to unveil and capture the infamous Dark Wizard Gellert Grindelwald. However, as he promised he would, Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more followers to his cause—elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore. But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander. The adventure reunites Newt with Tina, Queenie, and Jacob, but his mission will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world”.
The biggest casting news which is coming out is of actor Brontis Jodorowsky as Nicholas Flamel, the alchemist who achieved immortality. He was the man who created Sorcerer’s Stone which was sought by Voldemort in the first installment. After the disaster, Flamel decided to destroy the stone despite the fact that it kept him alive for 690 years. He was friends with Dumbledore for years so he must have been around when Dumbledore and Newt Scamander were fighting Grindelwald.
J.K. Rowling is pretty active on social media and engages with her fans on a regular basis. She takes part in Q&A’s and has great sessions with her legions of fans. But, sometimes like everyone else she can slip up. She mistakingly may have given a big spoiler for Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them 2.
While answering a fan on Twitter who asked about the protagonist Newt Scamander’s Patronus. A Patronus is a magical animal that protects the one who summons it from Dementors kiss. All Potterheads are aware of this term and it certainly creates a sense of terror in the prisoners of Azkaban. The dementor’s kiss refers to the despicable act through which the dementors suck out the soul of their victims. It is surely the most horrifying punishment ever and the ones who die because of the kiss cannot become ghosts as they have lost their souls to the monsters.
Could this mean that Dementors are back in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2? Is there some link of Newt’s Patronus being same as someone from the original Harry Potter series? We will have to wait and find out. But, what is sure from this reveal from Rowling is that Dementors will be back!
The Harry Potter series is known for its fantastic beasts but there are certain creatures in the Potter universe which are the “foulest creatures to walk the earth”. Dementors are not only dangerous but make a person feel dead inside (literally as they suck out your soul). Dementors are not born, they grow in places where there are too much misery and horror. The dementors at Azkaban grew thereafter an evil wizard did experiment on innocent muggles and tortured them in that fort. The foul creatures feed on misery and grow stronger with every tormented person.
Even though not much is known about the nature and biology of dementors, we know that they are evil and greedy. Voldemort recognized this fact and therefore offered them positions in his army. He offered them bodies to feed off and got their allegiance. They supported him in not just the second wizarding war but also helped the death eaters including Bellatrix Lestrange escape. You may wonder where the dementors came from and how did they become the protectors of Azkaban. Well for starters dementors weren’t really appointed by wizards to work at the wizard prison. When Azkaban was discovered by the wizarding community, the dementors were discovered there too. It is believed that the former evil inhabitant of the fortress did evil experiments there and the amount of suffering he caused to the poor muggles in the fortress led to the growth of dementors. So when Azkaban was rediscovered it was infested with these foul creatures.
As we now know that dementors were found in the Azkaban fort on the island and were later made the guards of the wizard prison. However, this wasn’t the first decision by the wizarding community and the Azkaban fort was to be destroyed but the wizards were worried that the dementors could take revenge and come after them. Later Azkaban was turned into a prison so that the dementors could stay there and guard the prisoners.
After the second wizarding war and Voldemort’s death, dementors were finally fired from their jobs. After the war, the new Minister for Magic Kingsley Shacklebolt ushered in the reforms and the Dementors were driven out and replaced by Aurors, who would all take rotating shifts at the prison along with their regular duties. It is not known how to kill dementors so they could only be driven away and it could not have been an easy task. It is true that dementors turned Azkaban into a completely inhumane facility so it was really important to banish them.
So how do we protect ourselves against them? Well, chocolate has mood enhancing properties which help us feel better and positive instantly. Positivity works like a shield against dementors so chocolate is a short-term remedy for it. Azkaban is a terrifying place to live for a wizard and the Dementors made sure every prisoner was depressed and mentally unhinged. However, dementors can only feed off of human emotions and don’t have that much power over animals. Sirius, as we know, was an animagus and could take the form of a dog and therefore he spent most of his time there in his animagus form. Also, the fact that he knew about his own innocence helped him stay mentally stable and plot his escape.
Dementors are basically created by J.K. Rowling to express her own depression. She went through terrible times in her life when she was at the rock bottom. A single mother whose book got rejected more than 10 times by publishers, Rowling really was at her worst time. At that time she got inspired to create these creatures and described depression as:
“The absence of being able to envisage that you will ever be cheerful again. The absence of hope. That very deadened feeling, which is so very different from feeling sad.”
The film expands the wizarding world, moving from New York to London and on to Paris. There are also some surprising nods to the Harry Potter stories that will delight fans of the books and film series. The director of first part David Yates is back for the sequel and there are five movies planned in this series. The movie is set to release on November 16, 2018. So, we will have to wait for Newt’s Patronus to be revealed.
