The recent release and success of Suicide Squad has proven that movie audience are game for movies about villains. The Suicide Squad movie has recieved harsh criticism and bad reviews from the critics but movie goers have turned a blind eye to it, instead championing the movie about some of the most infamous comic book villains. This brings us to the question, will a Sinister Six movie finally get made? To know about the Sinister Six movie is to trace back Sony’s past history.
Like Suicide Squad, Sinister Six is about a group of supervillians that are all arch nemesis of Spiderman. The original Sinister Six – Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Sandman, and Electro. The members have changed through the years just like Suicide Squad but the premise has seen many versions from comic book to tv shows to video games. Spider-man has always been one of the most prominent and well known superheroes of the past two decades.
This was in part, because of Sony’s mega blockbusters Spider-man triology by Sam Raimi with stars Toby McGuire and Kirsten Dunst. In 2012, Sony relaunched the franchise with The Amazing Spider-man starring Andrew Garfield directed by Marc Webb. The sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was supposed to be a launchpad for a broader universe that included The Sinister Six. Sony was following the path of Marvel Cinematic Universe and Warner Bros./DC but unfortunately could not continue due to the poor execution and commercial failure of the movie.
Marvel Studios put an offer to Sony to share Spider-Man and relaunch the franchise as part of the MCU universe, which Sony declined. In late 2014, Sony was hacked, with countless internal emails being published on the Internet. With their internal difficulties exposed, Sony returned to the negotiating table, and soon Tom Holland was cast as the new Spider-Man.
The Hollywood Reporter interviewed Sony head Tom Rothman recently, and asked the question fans were curious about-Will the Spider-Man universe expand and if will Sony work more with Marvel? To which Rothman answered:
“Yes to both those questions. It’s been fantastic, our relationship with Marvel.”
With the first appearance of Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War and the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, the seeds will be sown for the Spider-Man universe to slowly expand and hopefully that will include The Sinister Six.
